altitude power loss

Recently i took my 06 wrx with very basic mods (intake, access port, bov) up from sea level to around 6-7k feet up. when i was up at altitude i lost a significant amount of power. My access port had told me at sea level the max boost would be 13.3psi, but once at altitude the highest it would get was around high 8s to around 9.1psi and the car just felt a lot more sluggish. Ive been running the stage 1 tune with my car. This made me think that maybe a hose was loose but on inspection i couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. When i was driving down from the high elevation i watched as, slowly, the boost began to work its way back higher and higher, and now back at sea level boosts to the normal 13.3psi. Im not sure if that was just the altitude or something weird going on but I would like to know. It has happened a few times when i have gotten higher than a couple thousand feet. Not sure what to do!

The ECM has a learning curve, even with the AP. Sounds like you climbed from SL to thinner air and back down before it had a chance to get acclimated to the higher altitude. Next time at 6K' get on it in 3rd (pulls to at least 5.5k RPM) to get your boost levels set for the altitude. You'll need to use on ramps or somewhere to "exceed the speed limit" to accomplish this, more than likely. Otherwise you can just baby it and wait until you return to SL to get full performance out of it.

I just came to Cali last week, and since I live out here at 6200 Feet my car gets really funky feeling the lower I get. After a few days driving around town it normalizes.. Then when I come home it happens again :P Guess you just have to get used to it lol.

A friend that moved here recently reported that his '09 REX ran a full second slower in the 1/4 at Pueblo, CO (14.5 sec. @ 4,900 ft.) vs. what he was running in Phoenix, AZ Firebird Raceway (13.5 @ 1,300 ft). REX was stock except for CBE and COBB Stage 1. A tuner says he can get back most of that second with a custom tune.

I'm not so sure of any tuner getting "most" back.

Maybe a fraction of it at best.
