2nd gear deceleration noise

I have a grinding noise when I decelerate in 2nd gear(off the clutch), it is only at very low rpm's(2300-1600), like coming to a stop sign. If I touch the gas or disengage the clutch it goes away. It sounds like a heat shield rattling, (but, I don't think that's what it is). It has always made this noise, even when I test drove it, I asked about it and the Subaru techs said that the tranny in the WRX's make that sound and it is normal. I can take it because it is pretty quiet but I was wondering if other people have this sound.

You might have a loose bolt somewhere. But this is really odd, never heard anything like it before.

I have an 04, and mine does the same thing, done it since I got it, and only have 1,000 miles, I checked all under the car for any thing that could be loose,
I think its normal, doesn't realy sound bad, just never heard anything like it from any other car that I have driven

Do mean a grinding sound or like an airplane sound? The airplane sound is normal, but the grinding sound is not. I have driven both 04 WRXs and STIs and there is no grinding sound, nor should there be any. But there will be like an airplane sound as the tranny deacclerates.

I have both, the airplane sound is sweet. The grinding sound is embarrassing. Nothing as bad as gears grinding, but the exact sound of a heat shield rattling. This noise comes only at very low rpm's, after the airplane sound is gone. I think I'm taking another look, this doesn't seem normal. Thanks every body for you help

I have the same sound with my Rex and Ive had it since Ive owned it. just mine happens in 3rd gear. if I'm at 2500-3000 rpm and i let of the gas in gear it makes a rattly sound, only in 3rd though. it has to be something in the tranny because it dont happen when the clutch is into the floor and nothings in gear. i also get a slight pinging sounds under the front of the motor in 2nd gear ACCELERATING lightly between 1600-1700 rpms, someone explain that ????

i found a couple threads over on nasioc about this issue. It looks like people with the 02 model and those that have had a lighter flywheel installed share this complaint. Apparently the fix for the 02 models is for Subaru to install a heavier flywheel. Has something to do wiht gear chatter or something or other

Hmm, this airplane sound people are talking about, is that the sort of, whine that comes from the lower gears?

Yeah, its a slight whine. Never thought of it as an airplane sound but I guess so.

I'm glad to hear that's normal. I was beginning to wonder a little.
