2200 RPM rattle

I am a new owner of an 04 WRX with 74k miles on it. When i rev it up in neutral i get a rattle every time the RPMS drop and hit about 2200 RPM. I also hear a slight squeak from the muffler. Is this something that i should get looked at and what could it be?

Are there, or were there any mods done to the car? Maybe get the car up on a lift or get under and see if there is some exhaust hangar(s) lose maybe. Where does the rattle come from?

The car is stock, i wouldn't have bought anything else. I crawled under as much as i could without a lift and shook the exhaust with my hand and no rattles from that. It sounds like its coming more from the driver side of the car, it's either under my seat or right near the firewall. Is it something i should be worried about?

yeah your car is going to self destruct in 5 minutes.

put the car on ramps if you dont have a lift. Like mentioned above, crawl under the car and have a friend rev the engine until you hear the rattle.

Yeah i know it's not going to blow up but i'm new to turbo cars so i was just being cautious. I checked it out this morning. I had someone rev it and it sounds like it''s coming from the turbo I felt the heatshield and it seemed pretty tight. Should i pull it off anyway and see if it goes away? Should i check for anything else or is it something i should bring to the dealership and let them look at?

Is it possible that one of the cats (up pipe or down pipe) has broken apart and causing the noise to sound like its from my turbo? The car has 74k on it.

Ok, I'm confused. You said it sounds like it was coming from the driver's side then you say it sounds like it's from the turbo...

First, check to see that all the bolts around the TMIC are tight, shouldn't be the turbo since the only time it really spools is when there is a load on the engine. Won't happen in neutral. Check the heat shielding on the headers, and the up-pipe.

Not really sure what else to suggest right now.

Ok. If you are able to, pull the downpipe off and look at the blades of the turbine. If there is any damage, you're boned. Also, when it's cool, try to move the shaft up and down, left and right. If there is movement, there may be a bit too much shaft play. If that's the case, you're screwed as well. If it's neither of those, we'll go from there.

Got back from the dealership with some wonderful news. My turbo needs to be replaced. They said the the bearing in the turbo was shot, if so does the entire turbo need to be replaced? The dealership quoted me $1,360 for the new turbo and install. What should i do? Would it be cheaper to buy a used bigger turbo and put it in? Any help would be appreciated with this one guys, it's bad timing on my part. I'm moving out for college in a month, this is the last thing i needed to hear.

$1360 is way to much for a tdo4 turbo installed. You could get a stock tdo4 turbo for like $200 or even cheaper. Install should be another $200, making your total around $400. Look on the classifieds here, or on nasioc.com classifieds. You could even check out ebay. While your looking for a turbo look into a catless up-pipe to prevent turbo damage.

sfelix is right abou the cost. Let me get your postal code and I'll see how much it would be to ship my TD04 to you. No shaft play, no cracks, good wastegate. I'm only asking $100 for it.

I'd appreciate it a lot if you could do that for me. Let me know what you come up with.

What are your thoughts on a VF39, is it worth the money. Also on the paper the shop gave me they said that the turbo needed to be replaced along with all screens. What are the screens they are talking about? My WRX is an 04.

You need more mods to put a vf 39 turbo on it.You would at least need STI pinks which are a good $250.a Downpipe and exhaust would be needed to.Your talking quite a bit of money at this point.
