Question 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX Speedometer not working, check light

Good morning any assistance would be appreciated. My car is a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX UK Spec.
No modifications have been done to the car. My mileage is 73000 KM.
I filled up yesterday with another brand of fuel, took the car for a light country drive with out pushing it to hard. After parking car for a few hours upon restart speedometer worked for a couple minutes then remains at the 0 position. My odometer has also stopped recording vehicle mileage.

Has anyone ever experienced a similar problem?
Suggestions are appreciated in advance.

It sounds like there's a short in the wiring to the gauge cluster. You can pull it by removing 6 total screws. It's super easy to check.

1-Pull the 2 screws you can see on the top of the plastic bezel around the cluster.
2-Pull the bezel out by maneuvering it around the steering wheel
3-Pull 2 screws from the top of the gauge cluster
4-Pull 2 screws from the bottom sides of the cluster
5-The gauge cluster will now have 2-3 plug on the top side that you'll need to check. Make sure everything is tight and then come back and report what you've found.

Thanks for the suggestion will give it a try. I ordered a new vehicle speed sensor should have the part by next week. Do you suggest waiting until I install part to try your suggestion?

Regards

It won't really matter that much either way. If it's not the VSS and it's a short you can return the part. If the rest of the gauges work and just the speeds doesn't work, you're probably right to replace the VSS first and save the additional work. I might have missed that. I just assumed the whole cluster didn't work.

what was the result of your situation? i had the same problem and replaced the speedometer sensor because that's what the CEL was reading but it ended up being the gear under the sensor in the transmission. i'm still in the process of trying to fix it

Sorry for not posting fix for this one! Turned out it was the speedo driven gear, small plastic gear which was worn. Expensive repair as it is located in transmission.
