2002 WRX Wagon Random Misfire issue!
I have a 02 WRX wagon with about 115k on it that has been getting random misfires on all cylinders. Here is a list of mods:
• VF22 Turbo
• Walbro 255 fuel pump
• Perrin short ram intake
• Grimmspeed boost controller
• Light weight flywheel
• MRT Downpipe
• MRT Cat Back Exhaust

I am still in contact with the original owner and he never had issues with random misfires, even with the light flywheel. Here is a list of things I have tried:

• Cleaned maf
• Replaced fuel filter
• New plugs x3: NGK Iridium BKR6EIX / NGK Platinum PFR6G/ NGK/Platinum PFR7G/ All gapped at .028
• Compression test @ 150 psi per cylinder
• Cleaned crank sensor
• Good fuel pressure
• No vacuum leaks
• New pcv
• Double checked all clips to coil packs
• Replaced coil packs
• Seafoamed Top End
• All grounds are good and clean
• Replaced Y pipe / All intercooler hoses and gaskets
• Cleaned battery terminals
• Fuel injector cleaner

This all started when I decided to do a tune up and replace the plugs. I have replaced the plugs three times now in the order mentioned above. As mentioned above the previous owner said he had the ACT lightweight flywheel installed for about 20k with NO issues. Car has been professionally tuned by a local shop for supporting mods. I am running out of ideas here! And yes I have read the following thread:

Should be NSC's at .026

try it.

When does it happen? At WOT runs or whenever?

kendalja 10-07-2012 10:56 AM

NSC's? It is completely random when it happens sometimes two days sometimes two weeks.

Next step colders=NSC's

Which ones are in there right now?

kendalja 10-07-2012 11:51 AM

PFR7G are in there now at .028.

Is it possible you are getting spark blow out? They didn't see anything on the dyno?

They never mentioned anything about this on the dyno. What are the symptom's?

So should I re-gap them at .026 and try again? Just got misfires not even two days after doing the coil packs and plugs. Codes today are P0302 and P0303.

Curious what is the weight of the flywheel?

The previous owner thinks its the ACT Streetlite Flywheel 13.9lbs.

Talked to Subaru today and this is what they had to say. They said that there is a flash for a misfire issue BUT talking with a master technician he said that this is more for a pinging issue than misfires. He also stated that at around 100k they recommend the valve lash needs to be adjusted or I WILL have misfire issues. Not sure if they are just trying to get my money or if this actually needs to be done...

Never heard of a valve adjustment at 100K.

On a side note, have the timing belt/pullies/waterpump been changed yet?

kendalja 10-09-2012 06:53 AM

The previous owner had the timing belt, water pump and pulleys done at 90k. Car now has 116k on it.

psinuse 10-09-2012 02:58 PM

Does it have a lightened crank pulley?

kendalja 10-09-2012 03:08 PM

No lightened crank pulley.
