08 WRX Transmission Questions

Anybody destroy their 08 tranny yet? Mine is making a ticking noise that goes away when the clutch pedal is pushed down and starts making noise again when the pedal is up. Have a suspiscion it may be the release bearing. Is this bad news for these cars? I had the same problem with my old Civic back in the day and just left it alone with no ill effects.
Are there any tranny upgrade options out there specific for the 08 wrx? I like taking the car out for lapping days and drag racing. I am looking into upgrading to make the transmission a little more durable for hard launches if I have already destroyed it.

Drag racing = destroyed transmission or destroyed clutch.

You can upgrade to the STi 6-speed if you really want to go to that trouble. The sound your hearing is either the throwout bearing or the pilot bearing. Nothing major, probably just didn't get lubricated properly from the factory.

Is the 08 5SPD to 6SPD just as much a PITA as previous years? Just wondering for the new guys.

My trannys on its way out too i think as well, 4200 miles, i think ive driven it harder then any other wrx in those miles lol. In reverse it makes a weird noise and it occasionally grinds into 4th and 5th. I think there gonna cover it, brought it in for the first service a day ago and they want me to make an appointment. probably launched it atleast 100+ times. Im surprised at actually how strong it was. Its still to early to tell. You could get some stronger gears but its not really necessary until your makin big power(more so then stock). thats all i know for making it stronger. That doesnt really cover the axles, ect, idk

There are alot of options out there for gears.
PPG
Subaru WRX 5 Speed - Pfitzner Performance Gearbox
Rallispec
RalliSpec - Gearbox Parts
MFactory
MFactory Competition Products - THE Replacement for Displacement!

There are several others but these are the most well known. A 6 speed swap is almost as expensive with the cost of labor and on top of that you are buying used and possibly abused components.

Look for DS1motorsports. I know for the 02-07 they make stock ratio gearsets (1-5) for about half the price of PPGs, and they said they are good for up to 450 ft/lbs
