Wastegate flutter. Trust me. Doing an exhaust will only make it louder, but just learn to live with it, it is a WRX noise (at least an 06 noise)

My 07 is making the noise described, but it has not done it since day 1. It started at about 4800 miles after a very spirited drive. Why would it start making more noise now? Could it be something else? It occurs between 2000 and 3000 rpm and sounds like a flutter. I can hear it with the windows up. It sounds like an exhaust leak.

I wonder if the hard driving opened up the exhaust and made this noise more noticeable.

i dont think its just the 06's...my family has owned 4 subarus in total, and three of them have made those noise that you guys are talking about, including my 05 wrx...the others are a 2002 2.5 rs and a 2002 outback sedan limited...and it was only wen i hit higher rpms that a certain rattle came from the drivers side...it went away on mine but it was still evident on theirs all the wey up to 90K

granted i do have catless exhaust and a 4" DP but i hear it too and it is def waste gate actuation...... you can tell cause the wastegate moves real fast under light load to bleed of little bits of boost... but once ## WOT the waste gate is open most of the time so u dont hear the chatter anymore......

my waste is loud as S***

no replacement 4 displacement.. oh wait boost....

Mine is just as bad or worse at WOT, but it pretty much stops at 3k rpm no matter how much throttle.

Hi sorry to bring back an old thread, but I wanted to know if anyone managed to cure this ticking noise under acceleration on an 06 WRX? Mine is doing the same and its driving me mad. Thanks.

Does the tick increase with acceleration? If yes...sounds like a rod bearing is going out.

yes, but like the previous poster it disappears at 3000rpm and or if you lift off the throttle.

Ok, do you know the difference in ticking/knocking noise and flutter?

I have not really heard flutter before. I would say that the noise does seem to be in time with the engine speed. I did try disconnecting the wastegate valve to try to eliminate flutter and it still makes the noise. Although if the WG was not adjusted correctly could this open and close by itself under certain load conditions? Its not pinging thats for sure.

This video was made by someone else, but sounds exactly like mine.

Is this flutter or ticking?

Its hard to hear on that video...it almost sounds more like a boost leak. Is the noise coming from partial throttle, full throttle, or both? If its just partial...its probably just flutter.

Its on partial throttle, better on WOT, and none at throttle for constant speed. If it is flutter is this normal, and is there is a way to get rid of/reduce it? I thought flutter was short, but I think if going up a hill I can get it to do it for a long time. Bizarrely it seems to be better when its raining/damp.

Does it sound like this? But not as severe?
You can hear this a partial throttle also.
