06 WRX Exhaust Tick/ Engine Code

I have a 2006 wrx i installed invidia turbo back exhaust and have noticed what sounds like an exhaust tick coming from where the downpipe bolts to the turbo, I had a buddy run a smoke machine in the exhaust to find the leak and only a very small portion is coming from the gasket between the dp and the turbo, but there was alot of smoke coming from where the wastegate attatches to the top of the turbo. wasnt sure if this was supposed to be sealed or if thats a problem.. also if i floor the car hard for a few gears mainly 3rd-5th or 4th-5th it will cut out at higher rpm's and throw a wastegate inefficiency code if i remember correctly.. im not sure if the two are related but if anyone has a thought id appreciate some help.

Do you have a tune on the car at all? And is the DP catless?

Boostcreep MTL. The tick you are hearing is probably the injectors (very loud in your car). Get the exact code.

No tune on the car and yes its catless I should note the ticking goes away once the turbo spools up its only there when lagging in the lower rpm range I know the car prob needs a tune or adjustment of some sort with the exhaust but moneys tight and I don't know exactly what adjustments need to be made I just really want the ticking to go away and should it be leaking that much where my picture is pointing

No, you shouldn't have a leak anywhere from the turbo all the way back.

It's boost spiking.... Don't go into boost until you get a tune unless you want to drop more dough on another engine

And the ticking from the injectors will never go away... If in fact it's the injectors you hear.

What Paul said about te boosting/over boosting. You really shouldnt be driving the car with a downpipe, let alone a catless one on the 06 and up WRXs. You run a very high chance of damaging more than just your exhaust if you keep running the car without a tune.

I think he's referring to the "diagnostic" smoke from his buddy's machine. So it's coming out of the hinge for the wastegate arm?

yes thats what i meant sorry, but yes its coming from the hinge from the wastegate arm once he hooked the machine up thats where a big majority of smoke was coming out of, i just went outside and looked into the engine noise a little further and honestly the engine makes some ticking noises here and there but nothing sounds catastrophic, would an engine tick only be there in a certain rpm range?

This car has 31k miles on it and still have a warranty, im tempted to take it to subaru and have them look it over but im worried them seeing the exhaust they won't fix or work on the car through the warranty because of the exhaust.. i do still have the original DP but.. man i realllllly dont want to have to put that back on before going to the dealership thats alot of hassle but if everybody really thinks thats my only chance then maybe thats what i'll do.

I WILL NOTE: this ticking noise started the day i put the Downpipe on the car very first start up and drive down the road to make sure everything was okay, i had noticed the noise and once the catback was put on the next day it just seemed muffled so thats whats making me think this isnt anything wrong with the engine.. just an exhaust tick i cant locate. i understand everyones help and knowledge and i appreciate it.. but as anybody knows id rather start with the less pocket digging problem options first.

I think that leak on the turbo warrants putting it back to stock and taking it in. Let alone the noise. I'm 50/50 on whether that's injectors or something has been damaged. Either way, put it back to stock, ALL THE WAY and take it in. It's not a fun way to spend a saturday granted, but the turbo needs work at the very least, and possibly the heads or bottom end. USe your warranty while you have it.

Another option is to pay the $80/hour shop time and take it in for a half hour checkup at a different subie specialist to see what they say first, but more than likely you'll just be taking it to the dealer to fix whatever they find and just adding an extra step for yourself...

Well after researching videos on youtube and listening to any slapping knocking and ticking, my car doesnt sound NEAARLY as bad as some of these cars and my noise isnt even noticeable at idle only that small period under a load, im really leaning towards it not being anything major.. unfortunately i do not have the factor catback still just the downpipe but im trying to upload a video of the engine i took a little bit ago and im having problems getting it to work but if i do i'll post a link and let you guys hear it.. it really just sounds like a normal tick from a car engine night and day compared to some guys i found on youtube who said even theirs was just the normal boxer engine noises. i'll still be getting this checked out but this is my daily driver, the car will be driven till the day it gets looked out i dont have a choice.

Do you belong to any groups that meet up regularly? If so, stand and listen to other cars as well. I can't get on youtube so I can't listen. Booooooo
