'04 WRX ESS Code - Cobb Downpipe

I did the search but could not find the info I need. I am selling an '04 WRX that has the Engine Service Soon light on. It passed the PA State Inspection with a one year waiver, but I need to solve the issue before putting it up for sale?

My son installed a Cobb downpipe and uppipe about 4 years ago and the ESS light went on. He was going to college in Florida and it didn't matter there with no state inspection.

Unfortunately, he no longer has the OEM downpipe parts he replaced. My question: what OEM parts do I need to get to return the car to stock and fix the ESS issue? I already replaced the uppipe with the stock piece that we had, but what OEM parts did the Cobb downpipe replace?

I was told that buying a tuner could eliminate the ESS code too, but I'm not sure I want to do this just to sell the car.

Any other suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks!

You need the downpipe piece. It's attached to the turbo and goes all the way down to the catback. There are several ppl on here that may have the stock downpipe laying around as well.

Is the stock exhaust still on there, other than the DP ?

You could throw an add out on Craigslist.org saying you are looking for a stock downpipe for a 02-07 WRX. I'm sure someone would trade you straight up for your pipe. The stock pipe comes in two pieces so make sure to get both. Your Cobb DP is only one piece.

After you change this out, unhook the battery for a few minutes and that should clear the code.

Your Cobb pipe is worth about $150 without a Catalytic converter, and $300 with one. The up-pipe should be worth $50. Put them out on Craigslist.org when you're done to recoup some of your labor charges.

A Cobb tuner can eliminate the codes, but they are $500. Also, most dealers won't take the care if it has a tuner installed. Potential buyers may be turned off by the modifications, so if you're just selling it, it's best to put the stock pieces back on.

Good luck.

The car has an Injen catback exhaust. The OEM downpipe parts fit this catback before we went with the Cobb downpipe.

The Cobb downpipe has the high flow cat. I guess I'll need the gaskets as well.

If there are no used pasts for sale, do you know a good place that sells OEM parts at reasonable prices over the Internet?

Are the parts that I need called a downpipe and a midpipe?

OEM parts have a range from '02 to '07? I thought I remembered '02 to '05?

Thanks

The 02-07 all use the same downpipe/midpipe combo. The motor is different in an 06-07, but that doesn't change the part you can swap with. I would just get the CEL fix which is essentially a resistor to run to the O2 sensor if you're just going to sell it. It's illegal for a dealer or junk yard to sell a used catalytic converter, so you're not going to have any luck finding a used one if not a trade from a private party. Brand new you'll be looking at around $1000 to get a new downpipe and midpipe. Not worth it, in my opinion. That's why the "CEL Fix" is the route I would go when selling it, but everyone else has a point. It's a big deal to me if I see a car that has aftermarket parts with no tune. You might be better off selling it if you can revert it back to stock. Bottom-line is, every car is fixable, but some of us prefer not to fix stuff and will pay more to get it the way we want it (stock) to begin with so we know it's done right.

I've got one (both pieces) if you want to pm me we can set it up... if someone can verify my stock Sti down pipe would be compatible for this use. Obviously the fit is identical, but ecu/cel wise.

Thanks, but I saw an OEM parts listing, showing the Sti as a different part(s). I'm not certain of this either, and if anyone is, I'd be very interested.

I know there is an extra cat in a stock WRX pipe vs a stock STi, but I just want to verify that with someone. Probably best to play it safe and get a WRX pipe, unless someone is 100% sure this isn't an issue.

Your STI up-pipe is different than the 02-05 WRX up-pipe. I put an STI pipe on my car to eliminate the cat. You should throw that thing on Ebay. They usually go for between $50-$70.
