03 WRX chugging/jerking on hard acceleration

just picked up an 03 wrx a week ago. runs great drives great. only mod is k&n typhoon intake.
my problem is that when i put it to the floor i will get a chugging or jerking that shakes the whole car as my rpms climb. it lasts from about 3 grand up until i shift, then it will stop. happens in third gear if that means anything. what could be causeing this?

possible relivant info.
this happened about three or four times now since i got the car. on the third time about 30 seconds after my CEL light flashed for a bit while coasting down a hill. the next day it did it again on my way to work. this time it set a code and CEL stayed on. scanned it once i got to work and it came up as a cylinder 1 mis.

I swapped coils on one and three for now so that if the light comes back on it tell me if a coil is causing the mis. in the mean time what could be causeing the chugging?

^Agree 100%
you might also want to give the plugs a quick check if it still does with the stock intake on

They can add power, but unless you know what your doing I wouldn't do it. Plus it's really not worth it in my opinion on the older models unless you are making a good amount of power.

Had same problem with my K&N Typhoon. Put stock box back on w K&N drop-in and no more problems. I was getting misfires also. I wouldnt go messing with your coil packs just yet, check your simple solution first.
Check E-bay for stock box if you dont have yours.

Good luck man.

Garage
Just hope your maf is tuned for your K&N, or plugs and a coil will be the least of your concerns =).
