02 WRX steering wheel jerks left and right, pulls hard to right and can hear a clunk

I have a 2002 WRX 142,000 miles, no Mod's... When I take off in 1st gear (gently) the steering wheel pulls left then right, back and forth.. it also pulls hard to the left. If I let go of thw wheel it will change lanes easliy. This started about a few moths ago.. I dont drive it hard, just a normal driver... It seems to settle down around 30-35mph.. when I turn it, I sometimes hear a clunk in the front end area.. and even going straight I can hear a small clunk, ocassionally.. Can anyone give me any Ideas of what this could be??

Could it be:
Trans/engine mount
front/rear differential
axles/cv joints
tie rods
bad tire
????????????

Looking forward to hearing from the all knowing gurus in this awesome forum!!

Thanks,
TRoy S

Ok, I have more info about my situation....
If I turn into a parking spot, either left or right.. There is a "clunk" coming from the front end area.. its only when I turn the wheels.. Someone told me to check the "trans crossmemeber mount bolts? Wondering if I broke something internal in the front/rear differential?? any input appreciated!!!!!!
Thanks Guys!!

I had a similar problem at 70,000 mi. It was the shaft that connects the steering column to the rack. It has 2 female splined ends on 2 u-joints. The needle bearings in the u-joints were flat sided. The part cost about 175 bucks.

I took it to the dealer to fix, it cost me 407$ to get fixed. If I knew what it was I could have easily done it myself for 175$.

The sensation is as hard to forget as it is to ignore!!!

Fidrat: Thanks for your input. What would that shaft be called? Is that something I can raise the car to check?

Yes,get it on jack stands, get a friend to get in and move the wheel back and forth in short movements while you look for play in the shaft. It comes off the splined shaft that comes out of the steering rack. Do this with the car cold. Even then you might not see or feel it unless you have the part off and in your hands.

It looks like this. I don't think I'd get this one. It says 2.5L automatic RS. I don't know if the shaft is different for automatics or the RS.

Better view of the splined female ends.

2005 SUBARU LEGACY LEGASY STEERING COLUMN RACK PINION CONNECTION CONNECTOR #e-2 | eBay

I'd get this one.
