I'm assuming your talking street autox tires (?). The best bang for the buck is probably the Falcan Azenis- very sticky (a little heavy), very reasonably priced. The Khumo MX appears to be another good choice (not as thoroughly tested as it's new)- sticky, reasonably priced. The stickiest is the BF Goodrich KD, very sticky, very expensive!
The only down side w/ these tires are they leave a little to be desired on the wet end, if that is a concern (it is w/ me as these also double as my everday summer tire) then other good choices would be the Bridgestone S03, Toyo T1S (that's the tire I've been running and like), Michelin Pilot Sport. Pirelli has a new PZero, the Nero that I will be trying soon. TireRack conducteda test of it pitted against the S03 and Pilot Sport- it faired very well against these worthy tires. I'll have a better idea in a couple of weeks on this tire.
These are going to be my autocross tires only. Therefore, I'm gonna drive to the track, put them on, race and then take them off and go home. So I don't really care about wet traction or any of that other stuff. I just want the best autocross tire out there that is reasonably priced.
How about 215 40 16's??? I saw some on ebay for cheap (ventus by Hankook). Here's why I think they might be good: you can use them with stock rex 16" wheels (which are way light, for stock rims. Cheap also). it seems that they would have a slightly smaller diameter than the RE92's (Better acceleration), and have a nice low profile to not roll off the rims in a turn.
They might look a little goofy, but maybe they'll perform better than the stock setup, for around 500 bucks total.
Those are too short- a full 2"! For a $100 a pop you can the very stick Falken Azeni's in 205/55/16- oe height or 215/45/16 a little over an inch shorter.
The azenis are good if you only want them for a little while. I had them on for just under 4000 miles and they are shot. I will never buy a Falken tire again.
That's too bad- I guess one has to give up something for ultimate dry grip and relatively cheap price- looks like wet grip and longevity.
I know my T1S's won't match the Azenis's in dry grip, but they do perform simply amazing the wet (they are also very good in the dry). Nice and light too! Azeni's run on the heavy side. By comparison I got 18,000 miles and 200+ autox runs!
They have finally given up and I will be installing Pirelli P-Zero Nero's tomorrow, we'll see if they can hold a candle to the T1's.
