Tools need:
Wideband O2 sensor
Reflashing software
Tuning software
Datalogging software
Laptop w decent memory and good battery(which you already have)
Cable to hook up the laptop to the car.
Boost gauge
Another driver to drive while you watch the logging software, or preferable a dyno would be much safer.
Patiences.<---this is a big factor I might add.
That's about all I can think of right now, if anyone wants to add something I have missed please add to this list.

That's a very complete list, but a little intimidating for someone new to the game.

Your choice in engine management will dictate what you need.

My take on it is this.

1. Engine Management.
2. Wideband o2.
3. Good gauges - (Boost and EGT will work).

As Kieth hit it on the head, I can't argue his input. Depending on the EM you choose, alot of that is included in the package.

If you choose UTEC, you can datalog, change parameters, etc.

If you were to choose something like opensource, you'll need everything on that list...

Especially the patience part. From what I hear about opensource, it's cumbersome to use.

My car is well, it's like 10 lbs of shit in a 5 lb bag...

True the list is a little bit much, but if you wanna do it you have to do it right. Enginuity now includes a datalogger as well. My best suggestion is to find someone local that will show what you need to watch for when tuning, there is a reason the pros are good at this, they have made the costly mistakes. Patience and the willingness to learn are to important factors in tuning, because you will see the wonder of modern EFI and what it can do. Trust me the old carb days were not the glory years for tuning...lol
p.s. As far as the EGT gauge there is alot of debate about using it, I would say its a matter of choice. I don't and have never had a problem, some do and swear by them, but then again who am I to say...

Best think for a beginner is to buy a premade map from someone like DTRacing™ ::# Custom Tuning Services## “Get a Dom Tune!”® and then just tweak it to be alittle more aggresive.Make small changes.

I have Cobb's StreetTuner software. My progression into tuning was starting with Cobb's AccessPort [v1] and putting the Stage 2 map on my WRX. From there, I focused on just reading about tuning. cobbforums.com has extensive materials/posts on tuning. From there I purchased the software, which has full datalogging capabilities as well as live tuning features. Then, as everyone mentioned, just make small changes to existing maps. Take your time.

I wish i could be of a little more help to you, but I believe Dumdum is correct in saying that you should start with a safe map and go from there. You will still need all of the above mentioned items to tune correctly.

Also with Opensource you realy don't need someone to work the laptop for logging. You can set the program to start and stop logging with the defroster switch.Take a 3rd gear pull and then go back and read the log.Tune fuel first, then boost and then timing last. That is kinda the safest order.

I have just always had some else drive just to be safe and avoid having my laptop slide all over the place and cause connection issues.

Wideband is one of the most important things....you need it not only to tune but to make sure you are running safe Air/Fuel Ratios afterwards. save up...the aem wideband guage is like 350

Yup. This is only 200 bucks. And plugs right into your computer for logging with either StreetTuner or Enginuity. Nice. No need for a gauge for this; but hey; why not.

Yup I'll be heading in the innovative motorsports LC-1 setup sometime in the spring just to hook it straight to my laptop for logging. I've heard good things about that setup.
