UTEC install/fuel economy

a few days ago after searching numerous wrx forums, i came across a thread where someone was talking about some parameters that they set that allowed them to get better fuel economy....paraphrased, it went something like this: "my round trip to work usually burned 1/4 tank of gas but today i only burned 1/16 tank!!" ....if anyone knows of this thread or where to find it please help a brother out...and yes, i searched for about two hours just now trying to find it...thanks

I don't know which thread you are talking about...mostly anything that boosts performance will hurt you MPG...unless you make your boost hit later int he RPM range than you will save on gas because you will be outta boost more often..you can easily tune your UTEC to save gas but it will adversely affect your performance

Its very hard to believe that you could increase your gas milage by 4 times, unless he was starting out by getting 8mpg. Think about it, if he was averaging 15mpg, which is pretty low to start with and bumped it up to 60mpg, thats hybrid territory, everyone would want to get a car that gets 60mpg and runs 0-60 in under 6sec.

no wont work. unless it's set to deliver less than half the original output and run lean like hell then it Might be possible but you wont overtake any tractors anytime soon

The utec can save gas. I have 2 maps 1 for economy 1 for performance. The economy map has more spark advance and has it sooner. It also runs leaner and with limited boost. For daily running around town it is fine. If I need the power, drop below 1700 rpms, click the switch and go.

One can save Gas Mileage by getting a "detuned" map and staying out of boost, but it's really only going to save you what, 3-5 mpg.. I can't honestly see much more then that.. If you can stay off the throttle (unlike me..) then you can conserve your mpg...

i remember that thread

basically what he did was create a map in which the UTEC controlled fuel and timing when in cruizing conditions(under vacuum)

then he tuned the car to run a 17:1 afr for his "freeway" map

I'll take his word for it. I'm not that confident in my tuning abilities to tune for anywhere near 17:1 AFR.

My car is well, it's like 10 lbs of shit in a 5 lb bag...

he wasnt running 17afr all the time, just in vacuum.

honestly, you can get the same affect just by driving 5mph slower with a lighter foot.

i can get 30mpg highway in my WRX if i take it easy(70-75mph cruising, sti 6spd)

Seems about the same as just staying outta boost all together...but if it works why knock it
