The brand of the tune shouldn't have any effect on the reliability of the CVT. Rumors have been stirring around that Cobb doesn't offer a Stage 2 power package for the 15-16 WRX with CVT because the trans cant handle the additional strain of an extra 30-40 WHP.
I have 2 fiends who are currently on the Cobb stage 1 on 2015 WRXs and the CVTs seem to be handling the additional strain just fine. They don't have trouble shifting with their paddles and leaving the ECU to handle the shift points seems to be fine as well.
What he said. The CVT transmission is not very strong and doesn't handle much more power than stock. That is the reason that Cobb won't put out an OTS map for stage 2 for CVT cars by their own admission.
Thanks. I have just completed a 1500km road trip around South Island of NZ, and am impressed with CVT, but it needs to be driven differently than a DCT, that I had in my GTR. Once you get the feel of it it's really rewarding.
The major problem with the tuning in respect to the non-manual transmission is the use of controlling and having the ECU tell the TCU how to deliver power to internal mechanism to handle that extra torque. This is a main reason why persons are starting to see problems with the CVT in respect to the Clutches like in the 5EAT and 4EAT.
About 90% of the tuners uses the OTS maps and just tweak or functions like fueling and ignition, along with boost systems in tuning the car.
Been working with these transmissions and perfecting how there should work indirectly, I can tell you it is not easy when you first start out learning, but there are many other undefined maps that are not listed in either Cobbs or Ecutek that even help them more.
