I am wanting to do an engine swap on my 1986 subaru brat. It currently has a 1.8L h4 I believe which is nothing. I want a fast engine that's reliable to make 500+ hp. I want to make it a fast car maybe even a drag car just for fun. My brat is a 4speed manual if that matters.
I might get some crap for this but if you plan on building a drag car with more than 500 HP then you are going to need one heck of a budget and a motor that more than likely has never come stock in a Subaru. Depending on your budget I have seen a few 3.6 litre H6 setups with turbos on them that can really put down the power but were talking a completely custom build/rebuild and tune. The best example I've seen was on an Ausi Youtube channel called mighty car mods. If your into watching build videos its labeled super-gramps.
In my opinion thats the safest way to make 500Hp to the wheels rather than playing with rebuilt 2.5 litre turbo 4s. If the brat has the room for a 3.6 litre forester engine and you have a turbo guy who can build you a custom manifold and you have an engine builder who can trick out a H6 block with custom internals and you have a tuner who can work with flex fuel systems and you have access to E85 I dont see any reason why you couldn't make loads of power on your brat.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the frame/suspension/brakes were likely built to handle/turn/stop a 150hp vehicle.
Ok thanks doesn't have to have 500+ hp just would like to for fun. I just want one hell of a car. One that when you race other cars they think they would win no doubt. So yes a sleeper kinda
Ummm nothing overly expensive. Open to swaps. The engine doesn't have to be beautiful. There is a guy who owns a channel called Regular cars and one video was about people pay lot of money for things that are more visually appealing than speed. Video is youtube.com/watch?v=NFDBZpg627o
Of you aren't aware that to have a motor that can safely put down over 350awhp you're going to drop at least 3k on the block. Unless you have all the tools/machines, then I bring beer and we can port my heads lol.
Also when you make that much power you'll need a more capable clutch, tires that can keep traction, brakes, suspension, and tuning. There's another 5k, so without labor you're already looking at 8k and that's if you already have the motor/Trans. STi 6 speeds go for 3-5k alone.
i would definitely try to stuff an H6 in there. at minimum a EZ30R. you wouldnt need a huge turbo either. something like a small to mid range garett. and grab yourself a haltech ecu and call it a day.
Haha yea. I've been looking at H6's, but not sure what to use. I def. look into an EZ30R. If you have any other preferences on a fun little motor please tell me.
ez30's have been around fro a while, and used in alot of builds. theres tons on info on them. the ez36 is still relatively new so some people are still working out the bugs.
i wouldnt say i have a preference. they're all good motors. u can do a 2.0, stroke a 2.0 to a 2.1, or build a 2.2t or a 2.5. or even the famed 2.34L destoker. but as stated, you have alot of room under the hood so i would take advantage of that.
These are some engines all the Porsche ones are not serious. So which one would be best or if you have any better in mind. ez30 2.2t, 2.5 whats difference. And whats this 2.34L destoker. All I really want is a fun powerful motor that just brings in hp. I am going to upgrade suspension and make the car able to handle high hp.
anything can probably fit with enough metal fab. depends on the extent of the custom build.
the # in subaru engine codes usually represent thier displacement.
the FA20 in all its forms is still really new and in my opinion needs a few more years to works out some stuff. but yes its a pretty good engine.
the 2.34 destroker is essentially a 2.5 block with a 2.0 crackshaft. shortens the stroke to reduce displacement while alloweing for incredible amount of boost and a rev limit of 9000 (possible higher). not something i would actually recommend building unless u have deep pockets.
the 2.2t is a closed deck from an old legacy capable of really high numbers (5/6/700+)
the EG33D is from the SVX i think? which isnt a good idea. not much info for parts for those engines so almost everything will have to be custom made.
the EZ30 is the 3.0L H6 that has been around for ever. though it never came with a turbo, hence why you need a standalone ecu like a haltech. also alot of custom fab for the exhaust and stuff.
sorry, i have no info on the ER27
AVCS is subaru's verson of VTEC, VVT-i, etc... except it works on the low end. its actually 100000x more complex than that, but thats a simple comparison. you'll want this if possible on whatever engine you decide.
alot of the things you'll need youre going to need custom made.
Are you looking for AWD or RWD? I know the Brat is 4WD but wasn't sure if you were open to changes.
I mean if you don't care what the engine is that goes into the car an want it to be fast... I have a suggestion. Although I am not a fan, the LS swaps will make that power and you can get it done within your price range with money left over some extras. You can get these pretty cheap and stock will handle a ton of power.
If you want to stay with a boxer then build a motor from scratch. Best place in all of the US to build you a motor is Larry's Auto Machine - Connecticut - index these guys are top notch. Doesn't matter what engine you want to build.
The driveline will have to be completely replaced. Transmission, differentials, the works. I'd look at getting a WRX, preferably one in a rear accident that got totaled, and swapping most of the driveline from there. 10-15k ain't gunna come close to it m8. You're probably looking more like 25k
Where I live I can get a wrecked wrx or rolling chassis for about 2k depending in shape, yr, etc
