New to UTEC? Read this...

Hope the admins don't mind, but I think this should be sticky..

It seems like a lot of us have the same questions about the UTEC and it's operation. The guys over at WRXHackers.com have come up with what I feel is a very good "newbie" UTEC guide...

Check it out. But, just remember this: It sounds complicated, but if you take your time and do things one step at a time it really is pretty simple.

And, anyone that needs any help, feel free to ask. I am in no way an expert, but I have learned quite a few things about the UTEC, and will be glad to help.

ahh, tim (the admin of that site) is a great guy and a good buddy of mine. he's very knoweledgable about the wrx. we just did a JDM engine swap in his car not too long ago..

Haha.. thanks Pat. Always glad to have people on the site helping others out. That was the whole reason I started it in the first place. Too bad I had to sell my UTec... *saves up pennies to buy replacement* !Cry!

couple of ?'s
first is this correct ... " You want your EGTs to be around 820-850 deg C under WOT. This can change quite a bit for different setups, I'm refering specifically to stage 1 and stage 2"

or... "Removing fuel increases the EGT, and advancing the timing lowers the EGT. You can figure out your own method of getting it exactly right, but that's a good theory to work with...
so advancing the timing lowers the egt but raised the knock,
and retarding the timing raises the egt but lowers the knock,
but raised egt can damage engines and cause knock
it seems either way your screwed.

why is closed loop better than open loop?

do you want to keep the 60% change over amount, or lower it?

i read somewhere about a system on the utec of
0-10 ecu
10-30 or 40 utec
30-40 -60 ecu
and 60 up utec
it had to do to some sort of lean part with the stock turbo xs maps...
anybody heard of this....?????
I am getting my a/f gauge and egt as soon as joey buys them for me and ships them.... I really want to get tuning on this , but I need the egt gauge...

Well, first of all, all the TurboXS maps I've ever used have run very rich. Espcially their Stage 4. I had to pull a lot of fuel out to keep my car from stalling at idle, and blowing a black smoke screen at WOT.

Closed loop is better than open loop because it is more consistent. Open loop sets your boost by whatever percentage you put in the map. The BCL will operate at that duty cycle no matter how much boost your turbo is making. In closed loop, the BCL operates at whatever percentage it needs to to reach that number.

There is a "happy medium" you can reach with timing, fuel, and boost where your car runs its best with no knock. Unfortunately there is no way to say "just do this". Each car reacts differently. My suggestion would be to start with one of TurboXS's maps and adjust it to suit your needs.

Leave the ECU controlling everything below 60% throttle.

Ok sorry if this has been ask but i cant find it in the formus . I got a utec off ebay used it has someone elses tune on it. It didnt come with the manual but it came with a print out of the instructions that are on turbo xs home page. Can any boby tell me if the instructions are the same as the manual . Also i cant figuar out how to update from 3.2 to 4.2 and downloada stock base map. Any help would be great thanks to all the people here everyone has been a real help in my desire to smoke stangs

I know the link's dead but this thread still has useful information for people considering the UTEC which is still a great option for those that want to try tuning the car themselves. Also, they're dirt cheap now a days. They were $1000 back when this thread was new but you can pick them up for half the price of the Cobb Accessport now. Less if you don't mind used.
