Cobb AP stage 1 hwg not hitting full boost.

Happenin' fellers? Ok I just received my Cobb AP v3, and put the stage 1 hwg 91 oct map on my completely stock 2003 wrx. At first I tried the normal stage 1 map and couldn't hit boost, so I tried the hwg map. I logged a couple trips with 3rd gear pulls (along with the others) and can't seem to crack 12 psi. I think the highest I've hit is 11.8 with no fluctuation or knock issues. Now, I'm pretty new to Subaru and tuning so forgive my ignorance, but does the ECU have to "get used" to the new map? I've heard from some to take the pill out and have heard on the same thread to leave it alone, and that it helps with boost. I'm not sure where to go from here, so any help would be awesome. It won't let me upload my datalog for some reason. I will try to convert to pdf and see if that helps.

DO NOT TAKE THE PILL OUT! Check for boost leaks and check to make sure your Wastegate arm is tight.

Datalogs please.

I don't think it will let me yet....? Do I have to hit a certain post count?

Don't think I have any boost leaks. Getting constant boost just getting "capped" at 11-ish psi. Going to attempt to close up the wastegate arm a turn or so tomorrow and see where that gets me. I hear it dump pretty loudly when shifting.

Never remove the restrictor pill.

As was said, sounds like a boost leak. Check all your boost related hoses, particularly the one from the turbo to the wastegate actuator, I have had that hose split on me before, right where the pill is, luckily it didn't fall out, because that pill is about $30 from the dealer, and now that hose is a good clear silicone hose. If you can't find the leak, get a boost leak test done. Cheap effective way to get these headaches over with.

Boost leaks don't usually fluctuate boost, they will have that capping effect, at least all the ones I've had did this.

Alright I'll see if I can't get it into a shop tomorrow for a leak test if I can't see one. I don't have a compressor or I'd attempt at making my own. Appreciate the info, gentlemen.

are you datalogging and going by boost error or are you going by the map notes? as far as boost target?

I've been going off of just Boost psi off of the datalog. There is a "Boost TD error" column. Is that what you mean? And as far as boost target, stock is something like 13.5, right?

yah i was just curious, with the cold weather and other factors boost targets are much lower than the notes say. i have a 03 wrx and in warm weather i get close to map note psi. i think the notes say 14.5psi for your target. i am still leaning myself.

Bubba James 02-06-2014 08:33 PM

Shouldn't I be running a little harder in cold weather? Denser air, and all that jazz.

thats what i would have figured, but i have been looking at other peoples datalogs and have been seeing much lower boost targets. apperntly there are other factors like "barometric pressure, coolant temperature (not active in the map), and intake air temperature (IAT) compensations for boost target and wastegate duty cycle in the ECU that do this." to quote cobb. that is of course you are in a colder climate.

Bubba, join the forum and you'll be able to post your logs.

Rule of thumb that shouldn't matter much with boost psi.

The hotter the ambient temp, the higher pressures will rise.
The colder the ambient temperature, the lower pressure will be.
This is most noticed in tire pressures and gas cylinders.
An acetylene cylinder with 365psig in 70 degree weather, will be maybe 140psig in zero degree weather.

Just my knowledge of pressures.
That being said. You shouldn't see a huge loss in your boost.
That's comparing oranges to tangerines.

Hell. Just when I think I know the smallest details. It's in the mid 30's here in TN. Which is pretty cold for us, but not too bad.

I'm pretty sure I did join, though, unless I'm missing something. You guys aren't gonna beat me up for 5 min like they do on gangland, right? I'm still showing up as a guest. I did email verification and that whole rigmarole.
