just bought my 11 wrx last month. Iv been reading that the stock tunes can be detrimental to our motors. Should i be looking now to purchase a cobb access port to retune now even tho i won't be putting any parts that would require the access port on the car for the next three to four months ? I'm all about longevity of the motor right now 0
**The Stock tune should be fine as long as your driving it within the speed limit and following traffic laws.** The stock tune is a little lean up top so if you are stomping on the pedal you can get some early detonation depending on your fuel and local conditions. If you plan on spirited driving or taking it to the track then you would be better off with an accessport and a stage 1 OTS tune. It doesn't require any additional hardware and it is designed to open up the extra power in the middle that the factory left out.
I also like that the accessport v3 provides up to 6 more customizable gauges so you can monitor things like boost pressure and coolant temp.
For the longevity & safety of your engine I would HIGHLY suggest getting rid of the crappy stock tune as soon as possible if you plan on driving this car as intended. Many folks have been very pleased with Torqued Performance OTS tunes. Eric does great work & offers impressive customer service. His tunes are superior to the weak Cobb OTS tunes.
I bought an AP soon after I bought my car, but ended up selling it & going Open Source. IMO, the AP is grossly overpriced compared to a Tactrix 2.0 cable ($600 vs. $175). I also like how much info is readily accessible & legible on my laptop versus the tiny screen on the AP. More info here: RomRaider - Open Source ECU Tools | Documentation / Getting Started
You'd need to look at your AFR numbers to really answer that question. But if you still have a powertrain warranty on your vehicle there should be no reason you need to change the stock tune unless you are getting a downpipe or some other mod that requires a tune.
