2002 WRX ecuexplorer

Hey guys I'm attempting to read the error codes on my 2002 bugeye wrx. I'm using the tactrix cable and ecuexplorer, what I need to know is do I need to connect the green plugs under my dash to put the car in test mode and use the reflash adapter in the white plug if I'm trying to read error codes or is that only needed when reflashing...?? Currently I'm unable to connect the computer to the car, it's driving me crazy.

No worries, so I'm assuming it's just tricky.. I've plugged it in, opened ecuexplorer, selected read ecu, gotten to the dialog where I need to turn the key to on and click yes (quickly as I've been told) and nothing happens. Ecuexplorer says it's still disconnected from the ecu.... I've been attempting to find a clear step by step instruction on how to do it to make sure there's nothing wrong but no luck so far. Pain in the @$$
