I have a 1999 my00 wrx Impreza 5 speed gearbox Im looking to do mods to my car getting around 200kw will I need to do any transmission upgrades? I was quoted $7500 for a Sti gearbox drive in drive out. Or I was told I could spend $3800 on a 5 speed upgrade to a hybrid set up which would be stronger then a sti box. Or should I just save my money as I won't need it car has only travelled 24,000km so the gearbox is still like new.
24000km on a 1999 is one heck of a find, good job. If your putting down 200kw I would look into at least stiffening your trans. What mods are you planning to get you to 200kw?
As far as stiffening the stock 5MT there is a company called Moore Performance that makes a brace called blast plates for the 2002-2013 5MT. Im not sure if they would fit a 99 but it would be worth checking them out. I have heard stories of drivers running close to double your power on stock gearboxes with OE gears and proper stiffening.
kw = kilowatt is the measure of power they use over the pond and in most parts of the world actually. Its the millimeter to our inch so to speak. Horsepower is a really antiquated measurement for the amount of energy something can generate over time. Something like 500 FT LB per second or the amount of work a horse tied to a coral could push in 1 minute divided by 60 ( seconds ). Because very few american use horses to do actual work anymore and modern engines make so much horsepower most american really have no idea what a horsepower really means.
Just for fun 1 horsepower = 1.5 ox power = 2 mule power = 5 donkey power = 10 human power : )
to convert from KW to HP you use this formula >>> HP = kw*1.35 so 300 hp = 222kw
also KiloWatts(KW) is used to measure electric motors all over the world
