trans upgrade

Well here is the deal, just ordered my springs the other day. So im pretty much at the stage where i want to start piecing together an upgraded trans for next spring. Two quick questions. Im making about 320-330 at the wheels and am not doing anymore performance upgrades until the trans is upgraded. My first question is how much should i offer for a used trans that wont go into gear? I can find them all over the place but everyone is just saying make an offer and i do not know what a reasonable one is. My second question is that im looking to make anywhere from 450-550 hp in the future and am curious what i will need to upgrade in my trans. I am not the one who is going to be putting it together. I am going to have it professionally built but i would like to piece it all together myself and learn a little bit about the trans as i do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Josh.

RalliSpec - Gearbox Parts

You need the gear set below the first for that kind of horsepower. PPGs will hold just about anything you can throw at them. Thats the dream gear set for just about all of us.

I think a resonable offer for a broken 02-05 5 speed is around $300. And to answer your question about an upgrade, if you are indeed planing to reach the power you've mentioned the choices for an upgrade become limited to PPG's, M-Works or other set helical or streight cut purpose built gears plus all other operating components; at a more modest power level the upgrade path would inclde more choices.
There are few vendors that sell what you are looking for, but it is better to send them the case (or broken tranny in your case) and have them finish the assembly and the instalation of their own or approved and warrantied set of gears.
KAAZ gear set here that is reasonably priced Impreza Transmission
Hope this helps...

if i wanted more options for gearsets what kind of power would those gearsets be able to handle. looks like 450-550 is gonna be an unreasonable goal right now. ppgs are really expensive. first task will be getting ahold of a blown trans. besides that gearset what other internals will i need? im new to the whole trans thing and just trying to collect as much info as possible then start my research. thanks Josh

With 450-550awhp you are not going to want a kaaz gearset. In my opinion you have 3 choices. A ppg synchro box, a ppg dog box, or an sti 6spd. All that power is a little hard on the trans.
