Tight clutch

I'm getting ready to buy a 02 WRX. I test drove it and the clutch is very very tight. This car, surprisingly, has only 18K miles on it. Is this tightness normal?

I'm taking it to the mechanic tomorrow to see if odometer is rolled back - do u think mechanic will be able to see that?

Is the clutch adjustable?

Thanks!

You can't "roll" back the odometer, its digital. I do believe you could however disconnect the vehicle speed sensor located in the transmission.

As for clutch tightness, my car has 13k and its still as tight as the day I got it. I haven't really driven any other stick cars to compare it to.

Your clutch is hydraulic, so there is no adjustment. The car you are looking at may have an aftermarket clutch. Or, it may just be that you are used to the clutch in a different car, so the WRX clutch feels stiffer to you. Have you compared it to any other WRX clutch?

Yeah sounds like an aftermarket clutch kit or pressure plate has been installed on it to me.

i learned to drive in a race ready honda crx, then bought my own car, a mitsubishi mirage. the crx is a cable clutch, the mirage hydraulic. they are totaly different. when i purchased my wrx i stalled more times than i will confess to. the car is awd and has 227 hp you need a stronger clutch than a 100 hp fwd car

you know, I had a hard time with this too. I remember test driving the WRX and having to lean over and say "you know, I really can drive stick" to the bracing salesmen. I came from a mazda, which has a VERY forgiving clutch and my other experiences with german cars ('99 m3, '79 beetle) were similarly loose. The WRX seems MUCH tighter and percise to me. With some practice I learned to even control how much power I wanted to let out which is something I never would have considered in the mazda. I think my 04 WRX clutch did get a little easier after 1500 miles or so, although that could be just a byproduct of the learning curve. Bottom line I don't think it's the easiest clutch in the world, but you wouldn't want it to be.
