Slipping the clutch??

I know I am being a total newbie here but..
What exactly is slipping the clutch? Or what does it mean when the clutch slips?
I have a vague idea but I would just like some clarification
Thanks

Everyones a newb at some point.

Assuming you drive a standard and know alittle bit of how a clutch works, slipping the clutch is giving the car some power while very slowly letting off the clutch until it finally grabs. This is the right way to "launch" our cars.

Try this, rev the engine to 3-4k, and slowly let out the clutch, you will feel it catch as your letting it out, and as it catches, the RPM's will slow down - dont let them, keep them high until the clutch is out. Thats basically what slipping the clutch is.

You might have noticed that if you just drop the clutch and slam the gas, you go absolutley nowhere, until the RPM's build back up and your turbo kicks in. Slipping the clutch is the only good way to get a good launch from most AWD cars. It keeps the RPM's high and the turbo spools very quick. The recommended RPM's to slip the clutch from are 4.5k, dont do this too often in a row because it DOES wear down your clutch.

at some point through the clutches travel it is "slipping"

when you leave from a stop in first gear, you will slip the clutch untill you are moving at a speed where the engine can turn itself over using the intertia of the car.

so, that magic spot on the travel of the clutch that you hold your foot at while leaving the line, is the slip point, or friction point of the clutch, its the spot where the clutch is doing what its designed to do.

when the clutch is doing what its designed to do, its slipping. usually.

when most of the people here are talking about slipping the clutch, its usualy related to how or when they slip the clutch to achive a fast "launch". a launch is an attempt to get the car to leave from a stop as quickly as posible. as aposed to dumping the clutch.
