Shifter stick moving in gear

I bought a Kartboy Short shifter with bushings and have only changed the shifter and the front bushing, when its in gear the shifter moves side to side about 1/2 an inch, i was wondering if it is normal for a 03 wrx to do that.

Is it moving when you get on and off the throttle? If so, yes that is normal. Your shifter is connected to the transmission which, depending on your motor and transmission mounts, will move significantly under throttle and then off throttle too. If that's what you're talking about, then yes, it is normal.

TiC (Turn in Concepts) makes a set of shifter pivot bushings for about 20 bucks. Those might help solve your problem.
