The WRX is IMHO a much better general car than the STi due to the value proposition. The WRX is considerably cheaper and the STi is rather overkill for public roads. The WRX's only weakness is that it is what it is; an affordable, practical, sports car with an impressive spec sheet. I think where people get into trouble with it is that they don't want to pay for what they really want. They want the WRX to double in horsepower with a couple thousand dollars worth of effort and then are somehow surprised when it breaks apart underneath that power. That's not the car's fault. In contrast, the STi's engine is actually rather tame for the car around it. It's built to take abusive driving in stride. It's for a different type of driver and frankly, we should all be more like the intended WRX driver than the STi driver on a public road.
