have you tried draining and flushing the differential yet? See if you have any metal shavings in the oil. I dont know anything about converting to rwd, but don't change one of the things that make a subaru, a subaru.

I know I'm bringing this back from the dead, but change the fluid. If it's silver your in trouble. Honestly, to me it sounds more like a tranny problem than a diff problem. If it was the diff it would hum anytime it's moving. It could be your transmission input bearing.

throwout/release bearing is most likely the problem if it goes away when you depress the clutch.
