How many miles are on the car? It may just need to get the trans fluid replaced as that can cause minor grinding, and that's generally a 30-36k mile routine.

It could just be driver error too... I know 3rd isn't the most friendly gear to get the car into sometimes just because of the layout of the gates.

I've been pretty happy with these on my 2007 WRX:

Kartboy short throw shift lever
Kartboy front and rear polyurethane shifter bushings
Andrewtech cocktail trans fluid (1 Liter of Motul Gear 300 75W-90 topped off with ~3 Quarts of Redline Lightweight Shockproof Gear Oil 75W-140)

For what it's worth, I'd probably recommend the Cobb shifter if that's what I had They're both good, just weigh the pros and cons of both and figure out what's most important to you.

The Cobb/Mode Racing short throw shifter is double adjustable, but kartboy's bushings are fan favorites.
