Holy crap! I have an 06 running stage 2 with 800 mi. How many miles does that gear have on it? Does that come from grinding/slamming 3rd, or is it just stress from the extra torque? After seeing that, I'm a little nervous. I don't beat the crap out of my car, but I do enjoy driving "spiritedly" from time to time (that's why I got a WRX and not RS). I change gears quickly, but smoothly. I don't just rev and pop the clutch between gears, up and down. Is this something that I can expect in the future?

I drove exactly like what you said. My car had about 7,200 miles on it, and I want to say 1,000 on stage 2 before it popped. I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure mine was a factory defect. (hopefully)

I showed the gears to 2 of my auto teachers, one said "You must have missed the shift" which is not true, and the other just looks at me and says "That looks expensive"

My fingers are crossed. I'm going to hope for the best and not worry about it. To me it is worth spending an extra couple of grand and not live in fear. How badly it would suck to have $27,000 in a car that I am afraid to drive. I bought the car to have some fun with functionality, and that's what I'm going to do (whether the gearbox likes it or not). Look out SCCA, here I come.

BTW: what does your dealer think about the TBE and AP. I am afriad to ask. Ignorance is bliss (I guess until I need some service work)

Ohhhh, yeah they weren't going to warranty it. I could have fought them tooth and nail, but it wasn't worth it for me.

My warranty is so tossed anyway.

so when you take it to the dealer to get the gear replaced do you have the option to get the RA gear set? im not really understanding RA gear sets, why are they better?

Mine were rallispec's cryo treated gears, which are cryo treated so the metal itself is stronger, they are polished so reduce friction (power loss) they have different gear ratios for 1-3 (lowe ratio's, more TQ) and the gears are wider with less teeth per gear so they are just meatier gears, but not AS meaty as PPG's obviously.

RA gears are not an option from a dealer, but mine were way cheaper that getting the stuff replaced at my dealer. They wanted for me to pay them 4300 bucks in parts + labor, and I got mine at an independant installed with a short shifter, tranny mounts, shifter bushings, and pitch stop for under 4100 bucks.

Which makes me laugh, for about $1000 more you could have had the absolute strongest tranny on the market rather than a tiny improvement over stock...there are plenty of people over on Nasioc that are destroying RA transmissions. RA gearbox is very expensive for not being much stronger imo.

Don't talk if you don't know the story.

It wasn't my decision. And that was 4100 INSTALLED with aftermarket parts, last time I checked dog boxes were 5k for just the parts.

Bro, what's your deal? Some people don't want to daily drive a dog box. An RA gearset is better than stock...

Pat, that point is moot. All said and done, I have about $2500-$3000 into my tranny. I didn't go dogbox, because I was trying to get out of it as cheaply as possible. Brent, i don't know where you got your price specs for oem, but mine were $895. The RA's were $1325.

awd/mxboy, if you two want to go back and forth, do it in PM's. Let's not crap this thread up any more than it already has been.

Thanks.

The Ra Gear sets are fun to drive because of the 4.40 final drive ratio, p.s. the lower the drive ratio the easier to break stuff. had an engineer look at my toasted 3rd and he said it was due to high torque loads and a wicked 3rd gear ratio. The RA gears are a lot cheaper than a DogBox and a big chunk cheaper than PPG's. I have looked into these gears and there are a lot of ppl on 400whp+ with no problems . BTW the tranny is not out of a XT, it's a wrx with higher ratio's because Subaru thought the engine would get better gas mileage at lower RPMS and not strain the engine down like if it were a 2.0

Not with his car not running. I feel bad for that vehicle, every time that guy gets in it the car does this. I called him a dumb ass because how long can you expect your car to last with those launches. Some people must have more money than brains, bad combo

When I get a rex I am going to save up for an RA right out of the gate, just to be safe

PPG gears can come dogbox, straight cut synchro, and helical synchro. So to stop the blatant misinformation just because I say PPG does not mean I am saying "dogbox".
