my car is holding up just fine... im still on the stock clutch at 51k and this is my first stick car... some people just need to learn how to drive... sorry
Completely agree with shamrock, up until this point I've only owned/raced domestics and still currently race one domestic. I've seen many cars that are almost 40 yrs old rip the front end off the ground on hard launches and not break stock 4speed tranny's and automatics like these things do with only 227hp! Everybody can say what they want about launching with AWD and how you should "know what you're doing," but you cannot deny that these trans' are without a doubt weak. It's kinda sad when 40+ year old technology makes your stuff (Subaru) look like something from some other companies' scrap pile.
BTW!!! It's not just us that have problems with these little Subarus, Car and Driver just did a long term test on a Legacy 2.5GT with the 5speed and shot the clutch at just over
32k miles, and those were professional drivers driving that one.
The STi USDM tranny as well as most of the STi RA spec 5speed and 6speed trannys are excellent. You'll often hear the USDM STi's tranny reffered to as "bulletproof". Subaru knows how to make a decent tranny but that costs money. The WRX is a balance between performance and $$$. The tranny was one of the things they skimped on. Don't blame the technology, blame the price point.
No, I will blame the garbage transmission they threw into our cars, and it has gone uncorrected for years now, hidden behind "hard driving" being the cause. Sorry, but how much more $$ would it really have been to equip our cars with the ra tranny from the factory? Bet not much at all.
I'd rather the car cost another $1k new than to pay $2k+ after the fact, not to mention your tearin' apart a fairly new car to do it. I have 40k miles on my stock clutch/trans and I'm jus prayin' for the best. I'm just upset with the fact that none of us really have confidence in these cars, most of which aren't even out of warranty. Everyone blames driving habits and how AWD hooks up better and puts stress on the drivetrain, however, you can't say Subrau didn't know this when they built it. Japan has had comparable cars for years, they probably knew of these issues before they built it.
On Nasioc right now is a 06 wrx with a blown tranny at 7k miles. It toasted on a 4-3 downshift. 06 looks like they are shaping up to be worse than the 02s...
Yep. KJ (the OP) knows how I drive and it is not abusive. 7k miles...WOW what a slap in the face. The 7k tranny was mine.
I am pretty dissapointed with my car right now. But I love it sooo much!

That really sucks man, I am on your side though, everyone screams bad driving, but how bad can your driving be? Are they really that sensitive to any mistake?! Please keep us posted on how this works out for you, what you broke and why. I want to follow this...
Because the piece of junk old ones did too, so Subaru added more torque, kept the same gearset, and here we are. More broken WRX transmissions, keeping a steady flow of income to the dealers.
I wouldnt say there the same. Mine has gave me no issues and I launched mine hard atleast 15 times. I drive SPIRITED and look at my HP and TQ numbers. No issues here the cars a beast
i have a 06 tr and i launch it a lot and have had no problem with my tranny i think it handle's all that torque just fine in fact it handles it beautifully but all i have is a cat back and cold air intake so any time will tell plus the tdo4 turbo sucks a alot but i guess that means the motor is pretty strong since the tubro sucks i wish the car came with at least a 16g
