How much can 2004 wrx auto tranny handle?

Got a 2004 auto wrx a few months ago. i was looking for a 5spd but couldnt pass up a great deal i got. I have a cobb ap and am just stage 1 now. but am looking to go to stage 2 soon and get a catless uppipe as well and possibly cobb intake. i am just wondering if that much hp will cause any problems for the stock transmission.

Thanks

Yep, power-wise, you should be ok at that level. The WRX auto trans is known to be slightly stronger than the WRX 5 speed trans. As long as you don't drive it like a complete idiot (like redlining it in neutral and then popping it into drive to make it launch), you should be just fine.

If you don't put on a torque converter, I'd say 350-400whp

Mosc is right about that hp ratings, and i really do advise you to get a better Tq converter. On top of all that get a real nice tranny cooler even one with a fan on it and mount that in your front left fender, that is where we put my friends tranny cooler in his 04 wrx, we had the tranny rebuilt and sent the Valvebody out to get redone as well. He also bought another tranny pan and put a temp gauge in there as well, We bypassed the radiator and hooked the tranny lines right up to the tranny cooler, Never really a good idea to run tranny fluid threw a radiator even though factories have done this for years for a stupid reason.

Well a guy on another forum I'm on has a 4eat and has all these mods:

Built 2.2 stroker, 3600stall IPT TC, Twisted Injection Water/Meth Kit, SBR 20g 25psi, Front Mount, 3 port boost solenoid, EWG, 1000cc injectors, 255lph fuel pump, custom 3" exhaust, Cobb Intake, Cobb Springs. 2004 WRX 4EAT

Take it for what it's worth but no tranny issues that I know of.

How long has he had that setup? Also how does he drive it? You can have 700hp and never break anything, it all depends on how you drive it and what type of driving you will be doing with it. I strongly urge you to get a very nice tranny cooler as well.

No clue how long but he breaks stuff all the time... Last issue was he kept sucking his inlet in two weeks ago.

i got a 04 wrx turbo auto. how should i keep the trans cool, and how much boost can the can handle. and if any one got ideas for a good setup for 400 hp

man show 04-28-2013 10:05 PM

You can keep the transmission cool by (1) not driving aggressively or (2) installing a transmission cooler.

The car can probably handle low 20s in terms of boost.

If your goal is a 400 hp setup, always keep this rule in mind: good, fast, cheap - pick two. Unless you're going to mimic someone else's proven setup exactly, coming up with the parts necessary to achieve such numbers can get tricky in a hurry. Often, if you upgrade one thing, you'll also have to upgrade one or more other things [insert snowball effect here]. Read through the information in this link, come up with a plan, and post it in a separate thread and many of us will be happy to critique it: Unabomber's Manifesto - NASIOC

Will you be building the motor?

If he's trying for 400 he will be whether he wants to or not

wrxturbo86 04-28-2013 11:32 PM

i what 400 but just need to know what to do to make that on a auto tans

basco 04-28-2013 11:36 PM

at least a built longblock, GT30R, and appropriate supporting mods such as Intercooler, Fuel System, Boost Control etc.

wrxturbo86 04-28-2013 11:39 PM

ok but for the trans trans cooler and temp gauge for that too
also whats a cheap way to get a lil more power out of the car for now?

basco 04-28-2013 11:44 PM

get a downpipe and a tune, you'll pickup 30ish whp
