grinding in first

I picked up my 04 yesterday and when it goes into first at low speeds (parking lot) it grinds pretty hardcore. if im at a stop i have to hold the clutch in for a while before i put it in first. Im pretty sure the synchros are starting to take a shit but im just hoping that its a clutch cable or slave cylinder (im not even sure if its hydrolic or cable). any suggestions? and its got 60k on it, thanks!

I have read before, and heard that some people say its kind of normal in the older WRXs. I dont have a problem with that in my 07.

sounds like the clutch is dragging. either the fluid is low, it needs re-adjusted, or the clutch disc itself is delaminating.

or there could be an excess buildup of clutch dust in the flywheel. either of that or the pressure plate may be collapsed or has a broken spring

to prove your clutch is dragging, the reverse gear should grind under the same circumstance.

and if you turn the car off before puttint iti nto 1stor reverse it wont grind

have the clutch adjusted or at least look at the fluid or reservoir

and also, any subaru trans is not designed to be shifted into 1st while moving

i dont mean to be a dick, but a suby tranny should be able to shift into first while moving. im not going 15 and trying to shove it in, i cant downshift into first to do a rolling stop or go into parking lots. i'll check the clutch 2morrow. Ill rack it and take a look around.

It does not grind in reverse, only first. i thought the clutch might be dragging but since it only happens in first it just seems like synchros. Im gonna take it back to the dealer if i cant figure it out 2morrow. thanks for the help guys!

if you do a double clutch downshift with an adequate blip it will go in smooth every single time. i highly doubt anything is wrong. do a search on double clutch downshifting i have a few posts here on the subject.

seeing as how it grinds at a dead stop right after you press the clutch in i figured the syncros. As did the tech at the dealer. Its still under the factory warranty so i dont have to rebuild the thing myself. Hes gonna rip the tranny out and order the snychros n what not. thanks for the help guys much appreciated!
