Front diff shot...2WD or AWD

So I found out today that my front diff needs rebuilt. It will cost me around $1200. I know some people think is stupid to convert a WRX to a 2wd but Ive always had interest in it and now that my front diff is done, I have the option to either shell out some money or convert it. Has anyone else done this or thought about it? And if I sell my car would it scare alot of people away? I just cant decide.

well the mod destroys your center diff and your rear diff can't handle all the torque from the engine so it will go soon after. So your choice is fix one now or have some 2WD fun and fix all three later.

I'm with both of these guys. I had a friend with an older eclipse that he thought he'd run 2WD, but ended up having to rebuild the whole transmission and rear end eventually (although I think the gears in the transmission were not due to him running RWD)

Can't he just get a rwd tranny and a different rear end and run 2wd with no probs. like a ford or chevy set up or something like that?

I don't have to be mad to punch someone in the face!

I saw that I could put a Toyota tranny in but then i would still have to get a beefier rear end. This is the second time im taking the tranny out so Im thinking about just putting either a 04+ in or try this rwd set up.

Why don't you find a diff from a wrecked vehicle or part out? Will cost you less than $1200....and yes, I think if you turn the car from it's original AWD to RWD it will ruin the resale value. One of the perks of the WRX is the symmetrical AWD system. Usually, you go RWD if you are taking it to the drag strip often.

$1200 isn't all that bad IMHO.

Look for used parts as Sandra said.

Lets also mention that the car is balanced for power to the front wheels. It would oversteer horribly as a 2WD vehicle.

So if I were to look for a used transmission, what would be the cheapest, strongest option?

Wait, I thought your car had a bad front diff? That shouldn't require transmission replacement.

Pick one. Cheap or noticeably stronger.

Unless he meant center diff since that is inside the trans?

Send a message via Yahoo to newtothegame
Search around, you can find a better, upgraded one (brand new) for cheaper than $1200.

The center diff in the WRX is pretty difficult to break. It's got more fragile components on either side of it and it's a mechanically simple part comparatively. The 02-07 WRX uses a straight 50/50 power split center diff.
