i own a wrx impreza. I was wondering if ppgs are good for a 520 awhp wrx or should i go with a dogg box? i still have a 5 speed tranni but it wont hold power!
umm... ppg's don't necessarily come synchro'd. You can get a ppg dog box. Having said that, I know a few people with less power then 520 have broken ppg 5 speeds. I don't know the strength difference between synchro and dog, but I doubt it's significant. You should ask Andrewtech.
You may want to consider going 6 speed, or if you're filthy rich, ppg 6 speed. At 520 whp, you'll be pushing the ppg 5 speed, doesn't matter if it's a dog box or synchromesh. The gears might not break, but you've got a lot more to worry about (transfer gears, shift forks, r160, axles). Of course, if you drag your car, then an oem 6 speed is not really an option. Hope that helps.
What are you using the car for? As stated above, the gears once changed wont be your concern, it will be the driveshaft and the axles more than likely. Check these guys out:Par-Engineering - Gearsets (Subaru) Im going with the second option thats rated at 650HP with a stage 3 clutch, lightened flywheel, and after the drop of transmission, rebuild and installaltion looking at about $6500

My car is being used for drag!
Ima try to get a hold of andrewtech!
I was just told that I would b better to go with a doggbox
I'll give d ppgs a try n well see what happens.
Thanks guys.. Keep posting more comments on these
topics if you got anymore advice!!
If you have the money, the 6 speed dog box is supposed to be miraculous. I think the ratios are 5 speed-esque, so they should also be good for drag.
Are you daily driving the car? If not, you should definitely get a dog box. I hope you know you should be looking to spend maybe $7k or more to hold the power (for a 5 speed).
The link I posted is dang near identical to waht Andrewtech uses (they use PPG) but about $1k less. The 5 and 6 spd can be several different ratios depending on what you want or pick. You can get 5 spd gears that are shorter than stock or the same as stock. Same goes for the 6spd, just research or contact said people that deal with them. I have been researching this since last summer and have finally come to the conclusion of what I posted earlier based on my tastes and wants of my car. Only you can choose and ecide that ultimately after you have contacted and talked to the person(s) that might or will be doing the work or ordering of your parts for your car.

newtothegame, who's your tranny builder? I think that's the biggest reason why lots of people go with andrewtech and ppg. Supposedly it takes specialized knowledge to install ppg's, not sure if that's true for other gears as well.
Thats not true about the PPGs. I have talked to the guys at andrewtech. I will be going to BenchMarkTuning in Chicago. The gears Im gettting are almost identical to PPGs, just someone else is finally making them, so they dont hold the monopoly on those gears anymore. Hence them being slightly cheaper, but if you do notice both gear sets come out of Australia.

The "Special knowledge" is mostly modifying the housing because the PPG's don't quite fit in your stock 5-speed's housing. It gets messed up a lot, most shops have never modified a transmission housing.

Mosc is kind of right on this. I wanted to modify my post because I found one of my old emails from andrewtech. It just depends on which gear/setup you go with. Even PPG makes gears that are much stronger than stock that require no modification to the case at all.

If you are truely putting down 520 to the wheels then I would suggest the full Dog box setup.. I am running it and have not problems with it and I daily drive mine.. I am putting down 440 to the wheels. i am runnign a 1-4 straight cut (Dog box) with upgraded 5th gear hub.. Make sure you upgrade the forks and all the goodies as well then your weak link will shift to the half shafts as stated above, the the drivshaft.. If you can foot the bill pick up a nice carbon fiber driveshaft, it will take a lot of stress out of the drivetrain with it's flexability and the light weight will aid in quick revs.. You will NOT be dissiapointed with AndrewTech. Andrew is a great guy and easy to deal with. I broke a shift rail in my box after he installed my PPGs and he fixed it for free even though it was an OEM part that he didn't have anything to do with. He is a great guy...
Edit. if you want to drag this car get a dog box. The lack of syncros allows you to slightly lift on the gas and grab the next gear, no clutch ussage at all. That is what I do and it makes for a quicker run..
