Adding 5MT trans fluid

Just a simple quick question. Is it ok to mix different brands of oil in the transmission. I was checking my fluid levels and what not today and i noticed that my trans fluid is not full. Its about half way between full and low. I am not sure what brand oil is in there now. my car is an 04 wrx completely stock if that affects the answer. Thanks for your time and input.

It will be fine if you top it off with another brand.

If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing

If you are going to buy some to top it off you might as well get 3 or 4 more quarts and change it. It is really easy.

Here's some food for thought: recommended transmission and rear differential fluid changes are every 30,000 miles. How many miles are on your car? If you're anywhere near there and you're unsure if the fluid has ever been changed, you might want to consider changing the fluid completely like boo-key bear mentioned. Just make sure you have the correct tool to remove the drain plug - for example, on my 2007 WRX, I needed a T-70 Torx bit. I don't know for sure what the earlier models require, but don't make the mistake I made and use a T-60, because you might end up stripping the bolt and be forced to destroy it with a set of vice grips trying to get it off Good thing replacement drain plugs are cheap.
