You gonna keep it stock? That will play a huge role in what you want to do.

I have killed 2 stock 5speeds in the past year. I am currently talking to a place called Moore Performance about having one built. Either buy used or get one built.

So obviously this is an example of how the stock 02 wrx trannys are weak.

Anything you can do to avoid the tranny from going?
possibly an upgraded clutch?

Upgrading the clutch adds more stress to the gears. So, thats not going to save the trans...it will add more wear and tear.

Ripping off the turbo?

You can help it by driving better and shock loading less. You can also buy stronger gears and put them in. You can also replace the part entirely with something much stronger.

most transmission failures have one of if not all of the following causes:
1) Shock loading / Abuse
2) "upgraded" clutches
3) larger than stock turbos or >94 octane fuel maps

No "launching" and smooth (still can be strong) applications of power. I have had absolutely no problems with my transmission...

This kind of goes along with this thread, but what different years of 5mt transmissions will fit my BugEye WrX? Sorry: Mine is an '03.

I was speaking direct plug and play. Sometime during the MY04 build run they switched axle fitment so he would need to replace those for a mid-'04 and up transmission.

Not only that, but difference between a push vs. pull style transmission in 06-07.
