Well I'm looking to upgrade my 06 Wrx. Vf43, 780 injectors Perrin too mount, has helix catted downpipe welbro 255 fuel pump. Prob right around 300whp little over 300torque. Was wonder what everyone thought about my stock trans pretty sure the guy before me put a new clutch in it very stiff ( feels like my uncle 383 vet the way a clutch should feel). Question being what gears should I upgrade to or should I get and Sti trans. Place around
Me has a bunch of totaled sti's got a price for a trans plus diff an it was right around 3000 what other parts would I need. Thanks alot guys just little worried bout my trans no grinding it any gear yet and fresh fluid in everything in the car.
and of course it also depends on your end results. if you just want a daily driver with a little pep in her step, and fun on the weekends then the rallispec should be fine. but if you plan on going full race the ya you may want to look into PPG gears. its a tough call to be honest. you can search this site for days and get tons of different answers.
Yeah it's basically a dd that will never see any track time never launched. Just spirited driving... Looked into lgt gears there def bigger then stock an about the same size when it comes to Sti gears. I'm either going with Sti gears or lgt gears. What's installation of gears normally cost? Thanks for the help
STi 6 speed swaps are always cool, but there is a laundry list of other parts you'll need to complete the job. That's why I opted for a set of upgraded 5 speed gears - direct replacement. Albins is a competitor of PPG and they make gears that are just as strong, if not stronger. IAG can hook you up with them if you're interested
$316.00 labor for the trans teardown
$474.00 labor for the rebuild
$4,142.51 for the Albins 1-5 gearset (after a 10% discount because I had to wait so long)
$83.95 for an SPT trans mount
$30.00 for a set of Kartboy trans crossmember bushings
$39.50 labor to install the mount/bushings
$7.99 for a 3" 2-bolt exhaust gasket
$19.00 for a turbo-to-downpipe gasket
$75.00 for the resurfaced flywheel
$5.00 for miscellaneous exhaust hardware
$48.40 for Motul 75w90 gear oil
I don't plan on going much farther after my turbo upgrade so I've been looking at replacing 1-4 with brand new lgt gears. And all new syncros and bearings for everything it'll come to 1400 in parts. What's the normal price got trans rebuild?
If you dont launch or drive like a ricer the later wrx trans isnt really as bad as people make it out to be. Imo it gets a bad rap because of irresponsible drivers.
Listen guys, the older trans weren't meant for much power past stock..... Add power, stickier tires, diff clutch/fly and not feathering the clutch.... These are all contributing factors.
Add in any kind of auto-x or track days.... you're asking for it. !Notfunny!
Yeah like I said never launch it and rarely go over 4000rpms I'm young but not stupid I work a dealership do I see what transmissions can look like when dump kids beat the $hit out of a car. ( Mazda speed3 and speed6) just don't want my trans to go after putting
My new turbo in. Thanks for the help guys
Guess I'll just wait snd see what happens trans feels great now. No grinding at all clutch feels great. New fluid. not beaten. I feel pretty confident that it'll be fine just a
Thought in the back of my head.
I stand by my opinion that the trans isnt that bad if you dont abuse it. Sure its not bulletproof and will not hold up to racing duties or heavily modified power levels but for a dd and spirited driving as hawk eye said his uses are I think it can go a long way. If he has the money to upgrade it then Im most def all for it! Hell, how many of us wouldnt! Some have had great luck while others have had major failures when it comes to the wrx trans.
Haha don't scare me now...on the back burner is my gears rally spec 1-4 is around 1700. Sti 1-4 is 1400 and LGT gears 1-4 with all syncros and bearing is 1300. Local garage around me that does a lot of subi trans rebuilding quoted me 850. Which gears are the strongest? I'd have to think the rally spec which is why there the most expensive.

I've dealt with that shop. Take it there. It's a haul from lancaster but they will do the job right. If you want and have money, he can put in PPG's or other considerably stronger options. Their price probably includes more than just the gears too.
Seriously, the guy at Rallyspec knew more about transmissions than anybody I have ever met. I don't know a lot, but I know enough to know who's bullshitting and who knows what they're talking about. Drop off your car there and listen to what he says. And he's good at fixing cars, not answering his phone. Just keep that in mind...
