2002 wrx deceleration noise

i have 2002 wry which just turned 80,000. i picked this car up over the summer and the car is basically bone stock right now. it had a new clutch put on it just before i bought the car and probably a month after i had the car i started noticing this grinding noise when i lift off the gas and its still in gear and clutch is engaged. the sound isn't really noticeable when the tranny is cold and the oil is still thick in it, but i notice the noise once it starts to warm up.

I've read other places that this is just a normal occurrence and it has to do with bad machining of the tranny, also i heard Subaru replace the stock flywheel with a heavier one to load the transmission. i also had some one tell me they though it was my throw out bearing, but its got a new clutch and i thought they usually get replaced when the new clutch is put in.

so I'm wondering if anyone has any other ideas or any real sure answeres

I'm also new to this forum

Welcome,
I would ask to see if the shop that did the clutch replaced/resurfaced the flywheel... among other things.

tranny sounds are harder to diagnose than engine issues.

Try to drain it and see if you see anything out of the norm <-- best place to start IMHO

Find a local meat and have them listen and report back. Maybe get a vid/audio up (might be able to hear it).

I wouldn't put all my ducks in a row based off fluid only. Not on your car.

yeah I'm going to replace the oil in the tranny and look for some metal shavings. but i did take it to subaru awhile back and have them diagnose it. they said when they drove it they could hear it but when they had it on the rolling rack it never showed up, so they said to just drive it and if it get worse then bring it in. it really hasn't gotten worse but I've just been trying to do more research on it and see if it is a pretty common noise. which finding a lot of people complaining about but no real solutions. the cars transmission seems to drive just find also

My 02 has made a grinding sound like you are describing for years. It is most noticeable in 3rd and 4th when I lift off throttle esp. around 30-45 mph. It goes away if I clutch in, or get back on the gas, even just slightly.

I have replaced the clutch, installed a sleeve kit for the TO bearing carrier and replaced all the transfer case bearings thinking that it would go away. At 202K miles it still does it and nothing has failed. I have run both Scotty's cocktail and Andrewtech (currently) no difference.

On that subject, don't use the Grimmspeed blend (Scotty's) as it will eventually deteriorate the shift shaft, front and rear main seals. It took 3 years, but as others discovered, the blend goes acidic. I have first hand proof of that. So far, the Andrew tech blend has been great.

Bottom line, don't worry about the noise (if it's truly the same as mine)
