Question 02 front axle help


right axle is going bad and needs to be replaced soon.. ive never messed with an awd tranny/axle setup.ive changed many fwd axles and i know depending on which axle you replace you may not have to change the gear lube... how are the Subarus set up... will i need to get some gear lube..

They are super easy to replace, like mentioned above, they are female axles that are held in place with a roll pin, you will have to break the ball joint free on the side you are replacing to provide room to slide the stub out of the hub assembly. Then all you have to do is pound out the roll pin with a drift. The hardest part is getting the splines lined up to pound the roll pin back in.

I assume you are talking about the front right axle?

I know this is an old thread, and hope you have resolved the problem by now, but I have two half shafts left over from my 05 trans swap. Both these axles were in great working order but you need to use the 05 axles with the trans. If you are intrested I will let them go for 30 for one 60 for both.

Since this thread was revived, I will use the opportunity to point out that a torn DOJ (inner) boot or CVJ (outer) boot are not a reason to replace the axle. From my experience, aftermarket and re-manned axles are crap compared to the OEMs. Rebooting the axle is a simple and inexpensive repair. (boots and bands cost less than $30, use OEM, not auto part store crap)

The only reason to replace would be if the boot has been torn for so long that the joint itself is damaged, either from loosing all its grease or because dirt and grit got in there. A damaged joint will click or clunk when turning or accelerating (or both). We usually only see that when the boot has been open for a long, long time. Spend wisely
