Word Censorship not too accurate

Hi

I've noticed with me and other posts the censorship is not that accurate in that it censors regular words sometimes... I don't mean a near vulgar word, I mean a word like "probably" this leads to me not being able to understand other people's posts, as well as my own! Also when it does censor a vulgar word, it sometimes does in a way that makes me not understand again too.

We censor vulgar words and shortened slang words so that people will type their words out completely to make it easy for everyone to understand, not just those who understand webspeak and instant message language.

It seems to be censoring the word "the" in lots of posts...if its not censoring the word "the" I cannot fully understand what is being written there that is being censored. An example would be the title of this thread, though I have noticed it before. For the life of me I cannot find those posts right now.

shortened slang words? I've never heard of a forum/message board doing that, interesting, but maybe that explains things like "the" mxboy was talking about, people may have used "da"...

Exactly. It's our way of addressing the problem that is starting to plague forums like ours more and more - people using webspeak and slang. If they don't type out their words they'll have them censored on our site. Sure, it may be tough to read them but if the person is using webspeak they're not communicating well for everyone to understand them anyway. And that's not what we want in our Tech forums. If they want people on our site to understand them they'll need to use complete words and sound like a semi-educated adult. I sure as hell don't have time to keep up with webspeak trends and I'm sure others don't either. It's much easier to keep one common language - here people are expected to use English, not webspeak, instant messenger shorthand, etc. If they do their posts will be difficult to understand.

It's just one way we're trying to keep a higher standard around here with our tech forums.

It's the common shortening for the word "your" or "you're" that's being censored.

Send a message via AIM to eighth08
why not instead of censoring the words.. replace them.. so if someone says u-r replace it with your instead of ##

that way people know whats supposed to be there.

Because it's not something the script can do. The filter replaces each letter in the offending word with whatever character you want, it won't swap a complete word with another word.
