Heh... a few days after I got my car, a security guard at the school I work at came outside and saw the front of my car, and he asks me, "Hey! Oh! Oh! Oh! Is that one of those...." and here I think he's going to say Imprezas? WRXs? Turbos? Nope, he says, "...hybrids". Does my car seriously look like it's battery powered? !Cry!

it's situations like that when it's nice to have a loud exhaust... battery-powered cars can't growl like a suby can

I was looking to test drive a brand new WRX a few years back and the Subie dealer makes a big scene about brushing all the snow away from the hood scoop and says "Thats the air intake, you know where the air goes into the engine. If you clog it up you'll choke it out." I just smiled and nodded and proceeded to scare the crap out of him on the test drive. And of course he remarks that the great handaling on snow was the type of tire it had on it. Pretty sure he was from the Kia Dept. covering for someone.

I was talking to a diesel mechanic at my work about a crappy ebay short ram and how it made a flat spot in the powerband around 5100 to 5500 and then smooth sailing all the way to 7000. He replies, "Holy (explitive, explitive), you're gonna blow your car up reving that high! You should go no higher than 5500 RPM on any pump gas engine!" Funny thing is that if he was talking about the cheapo short ram he would of been right.

5500RPMs? Sheesh, guess he's never sat in an NSX

BTW, no stock EJ205 internals car makes good power at 7000rpms. You should not run it that high. You're much better off shifting at 6500rpms or even 6000rpms mattering on the size of your turbo.

Just for an example, here's my dyno graph:

You can see that my torque starts falling off WAY before 7000 rpms (I have a EJ257 and a small turbo but that's not the point). If I shift from Second gear at just 6000rpms, I go into first a ~3700rpms. You can clearly see I make more torque at 3700rpms than I do at 6000rpms. If I run to redline, I'm actually MISSING my peak torque (3600-4600rpms). Now that I look at this again, even waiting to 6000 rpms is too late for me

Running the car to the redline routinely just makes you slow and increases wear needlessly on your motor.

Nope, talking out of my ass to the guy. Haven't run the quarter since the turbo swap, boost controller, and tune. Won't be running it again until after I fix the oil consumption issue. Probably going to be with an EJ257...

Except shifting b4 redline loses the fact that we can hit 60 in 2nd gear for example. You can lose time shifting rather than holding the gear longer depending on how fast you are accelerating to.

This is very true. My last 1/4 mile runs, I shifted at 6500 just to test the theory that was stated above. I ran .5 seconds slower than when I would shift at 7k. I still have the EJ205 with the VF34.

Problem is that the differences between the EJ205 and the EJ257 allow the EJ205 to rev higher without falling on it's face, depending on the turbo anyway.

Higher revs is where more horsepower is hiding.

My girlfriend just heard someone mention about an STI, but she thought it was the car when the person was talking about the infection.
