i love subaru, especially the sti's, but while my friends dad was looking for parts to fix the sti i was looking at (he owns a dealership) he informed me how expensive the parts were to fix it. now my mind has been racing all day as to if i should or should not buy it. im only 20 live and home and in college and im just not sure anymore. ive wanted this car so bad for 2 years but just the cost of geting it fixed if something broke is killn me. can any of you speak some words of wisdom as to what i should do?
uhm...what do you want me to say? atleast you dont own a mercedez? lol
At least it's not a Nissan.... Not sure on the comparable pricing to a Subaru, but my brother's old Altima costs $500 For a new Cat from Nissan, and since it's one that is ON the exhaust manifold, you can't use any other one. My bro just TRYED (key word tryed) to put a new cat in a new-ish Nissan Quest and the new cat costs $1800 from Nissan. It is also on the manifold; that's why it's so expensive. They couldn't even install the new cat because you need to either pull the motor to get to it, or take off the intake manifold, and all sorts of other stuff.
I'm sure it will be more expensive to maintain then something like a Honda, but there are plenty of other cars out tehre that are also expensive. My Volkswagen is quite expensive also.
If you know you can't afford to fix and maintain the STi, maybe you shouldn't get it..... A broken one is worse than none at all. assuming it breaks; which it probably wouldn't though
well i know this, but compared to other cars like nissan's or other domestics the parts are expensive and you got to go to the dealership to get them fixed and replaced and they charged you up the booty hole. the headlight assembly for the sti was over 800, the starter was 500 brakes 300 a pop, i was like wow...but the guy assured me that the only thing he had ever see sti's come in for were oil changes and brakes. but i had failed to ask him about the other sti's that come in with problems and need to be fixed. im in noways a mechanic, yes id rather do things myself but i dont have the tools inorder to replace things like that. i know subaru is known for their reliability and durability, but parts to eventually wear and tear and eventually break just like in any car. i just am afraid that if something does break that ill have to let it sit until i get the money to fix it and thats no fun at all.
I spent $408 getting my window regulator replaced, they effin charged me $300 for labor! B.S.!!! I could have done it myself if I knew how.
As long as you treat it well, it shouldn't give you any or not very much problems.
When it comes to little things like oil changes and brake pads, you can do that stuff yourself. If you need help with anything, you have a forum full of helpful people!
yea i know and thats an amazing plus of being on here, but im asking from thoes with experience is it expensive to fix the car when things do break and wear out? at any point were you like when u saw the bill for how much your car cost to get repaired?

i had to put a transmission in my car, i got a used trans for 1400 with all the axles drive shaft and rear diff but just a new trans alone cost if i remembers correctly about 3000 and thankfully i was able to do the work myself it would have cost more than i even care to think about to have it done at a dealer. that is just a for instance though most things that wear out are easy to replace. Brakes and oil changes about a half hour each nothing to it and all simple hand tools.

well then...i guess the only thing i can do is learn how to take apart and install new parts on the sti by myself i have a set of hand tools and all. Now my friend is saying that it isnt "practical" to get an sti right now and that i should wait when i am much older and have a career, and that i should roll with a 300zx or a cobalt SS till then. Does that sound right too you guys?
Subarus are pretty easy to work on which keeps costs down. Look up consumer reports average maintenance costs if you think domestics are so frugal. Subaru and Honda are tops of the list.
The STi's a turbo car with big brakes and expensive wheels. If you're looking for those things anyway, it's not a particularly hard to work on turbo car with big brakes and expensive wheels.
my friends dads mechanics lol. they say they refuse to work on them because they dont have the tools or chips. they say that the chips run over $1000 and some other nonsence. look ive talked to SOA parts division and i ask them about how much all the stuff is. they said that the only expensive parts on the car on the headlights and the starter and thoes were the killers. dude eff this, i dont care what people say or try to warn me "ooohh subaru's suck, you wont find parts for it cause there so rare and if you do they'll cost you soooo muuccch monneyeyyyyyy". im done, im tired. all i ever wanted is a sweet aspen white sti, thats all. and they say i should rather pick a 300zx or cobalt SS. i rather beat the piss out of my protege. EFF them all SUBARU FO LIFE!
Dude any car that you take to get dealer work done will be expensive. You can find parts cheaper and if your buddies dad owns a dealership he should be able to get you parts at cost.
If you take care of the car you it will last you, if you want it get it it's better than settling for something that you won't be happy with because every time you pass an STI you wish you had bought one.
