Its almost July, 2013???

So it's almost July and I have been as patient as I can be for the 2013 WRX/STi.
Where is it? When are they going to reveal it? What kind of platform are they going with?
I have seen a few fan renderings but nothing from Subaru themselves. So whats the hold up?

If anybody has a link than that would be great. And how come nobody else seems to be as anxious as me? Come on guys, lets see it already!!!!

I know I'm dying to see it as well. Did you see the autoblog post about how it might be an electric turbo? That might be old news, but I just got wind of it lol.

THIS!

Subaru, which is owned by Fuji Heavy Industries, is said to be working on a revolutionary new electric turbocharger. In 2007, the Japanese company filed a patent for an electrically-powered turbocharger and it is reported by Drive Australia, that the 2013 WRX could have the game-changing technology when it comes out.

The ground-breaking technology being developed by Subaru, would trap heat energy from exhaust gases, generating electricity to power the turbo. The traditional turbo needs complicated piping to generate the extra power, where the new electrically-powered turbocharger would create power more efficiently and also have less turbo lag.

that electric turbo does sound like it could be a game changer for the boost world,but aftermarket companies would also have to jump on the bandwagon,b/c like all car tuners we want to get bigger and better so when it comes time to swap out the stock electric turbo would be nice to add a bigger electric turbo.

Is this really a "turbocharger" though? It sounds like it would be an exhaust driven electric generator that would power an electricity driven intake air compressor (beltless supercharger so to speak).

Continuing along that line of thinking, would a belt driven alternator be necessary anymore? Why not make the water pump driven by electricity as well?

...very intriguing I think.

Electric-charger maybe? Either way the performance numbers you can achieve with electric motors is scary.. And when you want more power? Just crank the power up or swap a bigger elec motor in, I'm all for it!

Some of the older VW's had this "electric-charged system"

I just didn't do any homework on it as it seemed to be junk. I hope they don't go this way.

It'll probably be 2014.

BMW is supposedly putting an electric turbo in the new M3 so it's a tri-turbo. electric to get out of the gate, then the standard turbo(s) take over once you get higher up. If Subaru does use electric, it'll probably be the same concept.

Basically just a twin charger system.

Thats a cool idea though...essentially its a simple sequential turbocharger set-up. Which...I'm sure the aftermarket community will find a way to make it last longer. That way you can stuff a giant turbo on the motor and not suffer horrible lag.

I agree it's much closer in application to a supercharger than a turbo. It's more a "twin charge" setup if they go sequential than "sequential turbos". Turbo implies your exhaust spinning the compressor directly to me. If they're electrically tied, it's an electrically powered supercharger. Superchargers are classically belt driven, but as Paul said there have been other ways of spooling them up as well.

If it truly is a sequential setup, the second turbo could be replace leaving the fancy electronic charger mostly alone in front of it.

True...it is a twin charge system then. But, its kind of better than a supercharger because it can just be shut off and it won't drag down the engine because its not belt fed. But, it would basically serve the same function of a sequential turbo set-up. One charging system to get you going and it can be pumping pretty good at low rpm. Once you're moving and the rpms are higher the real turbo can get the job done. Pretty slick...if that is what they're coming up with.

reading your post turmic, it just struck me that this system could be the demise of the variable vane turbo...

In other words, the rpm of the intake air compressor (electric supercharger) could be programmed to spin at a variable rate that is independent of the engine rpm.
