Can someone settle an argument?

Warning: Not WRX related

My friend has an '01 Focus ZX3 with the 2.0l Zetec engine. He says the engine was built in Japan, I say Mexico. Who's right?

I care because I hate being wrong. Anyone with a high school education want to help me?

I would say probably Japan just because 9/10 things are made there now since it's cheaper. I don't pay attention to Ford though so that's just a guess

I think it would be just as cheap if not cheaper to build in Mexico. The shipping charges alone would be much cheaper, but thats just my opinion. Check the engine bay to see where it is made.

just about every GM and Ford vehicle is built in either Mexico or Canada. Cheap work and no over-seas shipping. Most imported vehicles are actually built in the US. Its cheaper for them to ship some parts over here, and pay us overpaid americans to put it all together than it is to ship a whole car.

It might be built overseas.. I know that DSMs had their engines built in Japan and the rest of the car was assembled in the US. That might be the case here as well. Were the Mexico-based VW Jetta engines being assembled in Mexico, or were the engines just shipped over and dropped into the car at the plant? I'm guessing the latter. I would think engine assembly is something you'd want done in one place - the source. If the Zetec engines were designed/engineered in Japan, then there's a good chance they're shipped from Japan.

I knew the focus was designed in europe, no idea the engine was made there too. Focus ain't all that bad of a car. Great point a to b car.

met lots of people with focuses (foci?) and I have not met anyone that was satisfied with the car... They have electrical problems to beat the band... My friend's has spent probably 90 days in the shop (adding up several visits) getting warranty work done and his electrical system STILL cuts out randomly when he is on the highway.

now if you were to mention the N20 Focus THAT is a great a-z car
