Stuck on Decision for New Tires

So, I have been saving for a few months now, but still on a tight budget for new tires.

I narrowed it down to; Pilot Super Sport, the new Dunlop Z2, Hankook Rs3, and the Federal 595s. The 595s are a great price and the Pilot Super Sports are a great all around tire. I am still having trouble making a decision. I will mostly use them for daily driving and some track days here in SoCal. Harsh ride doesn't concern me too much, it's always sunny here so I don't worry about wet performance too much. I am upgrading my springs and getting sways after this in case that helps.

But any helpful experience or recommendations on optimal tire size for my 06 WRX would be much appreciated. I just got upgraded brakes so I want the new tires to go on at the same time.

Thanks !Thumbs Up

Edit: sorry I realized after I got home this thread is kind of in the wrong section, did it on my phone at first and I must have not noticed the forum it was going in.

So, I did a little more research on the federal 595s and I have seen everything from stickiest tires ever to absolute rubbish to drift only tires to good but many blowouts even during daily driving. Ughh, great price but now I am wary, anyone here have first hand experience with any issues with these tires?

The RS3's are too sticky for your car.

A good cheap DD tire for your car is the Hankook V12 although their sidewall isn't very strong and will not blow your mind for Auto-x or track days.

The pilot may be your best bet if combining track and DD. The Falken Azenis (another sticky tire) might be another to look at as well as the Dunlop Star Specs.

Are you on the stock wheel/rim?

Many of the guys/gals on here like Bridgestone's (they will chime in). What price range are you looking at?

Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec 225/45R17

Get 'em while ya' can. They are being discontinued and replaced by the more expensive (of course) Direzza ZII. That is all.

WHAAAAAAAT!!???! NOOOOOO!!!! Not my Star Specs !Cry!

Those tires are awesome !Thumbs Up

Those ZII's are supposed to trump the Star Specs

Read something a while back.

Yeah, I'm sure they'll be better... I was just complaining for the sake of complaining :)

Fidrat 02-05-2013 02:02 AM

They better be better. With the price increase they just lost the bang for the buck factor.:pity:

I'm still mourning the loss of my Kumho Ecsta MX'es.!Cry! Oh well, I got my Star Spec's last fall. I won't have to worry about tires for a long time.!Thumbs Up

I made my Kumho's last from spring of 05 to summer of 11. I wonder how long I can make my Star Spec's last?

The Federal 595 RS-R tires are supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. They do, however, make a 595s, 595ss, and 595rs, which are all complete crap.

brfatal 02-06-2013 09:16 AM

^ That's actually what I've been planning to buy for a year now.

Though if I had the budget the OP is talking about I'd run at the Super Sports, Star Specs, or RE-11s.

If you have lots of money and you want the ultimate tire for your daily driven car, you buy the RE-11. There may be slightly better tires on a racetrack but none are as well manored on an actual road.

I am getting these, the price point is perfect. Especially if you are doing a few track events you will abuse whatever tires you put on, so I would be on the fence about down some serious cash if they are just going to be trash after 2-3 track events + DD.

mosc 02-19-2013 04:09 PM

where the hell can you actually buy them from?

BoostinChick 02-19-2013 04:58 PM

These two places are heavily mentioned on NABISCO, so I would consider them a trusted source:

I've called city tire probably half a dozen times. They never actually HAVE any 595 RS-R's to sell, they just post them on their website. Maybe if you have 12 months to wait, you can order a set and hope they don't go out of business before they send them. Never heard of the other site.
