When do I need a tune?

I have been looking for a solid answer for about 2 hours now on every subaru forum site and cant find my answer.
My question is,

Two days ago I put a Megan downpipe on my 2002 wrx and I planned on going to a local muffler shop and having them weld on a 3in straight pipe.
I want my car to sound good and have a nice rumble to it which if I went with the above option ^ my car would sounds nice, and I could care less if I get 40 more hp out of a 400 tune.
So can I get the Megan downpipe on my car and a 3in straight pipe without a tune? Is this okay for my car? Like I said I dont care about getting more HP. I just want the car to sound nice.
Thanks for all everyones help, Im not that great with cars.

Btw. I posted this same question on nasioc... I got sh** answers from them.h

Yes, you will need a tune right away with that downpipe. No, it's not OK without one. Easy solution is the Cobb Accessport, but there are many other options. You gotta pay to play !

BTW, welcome to these forums. It's a little friendlier here.

Following your logic, consider this: A tuned car will sound "nicer" than an untuned car.

...and more importantly, a "$400 tune" is a fraction of what you might have to pay to fix things in the future if you decided against it.

Take care of your car, and your car will take care of you!

Er....he doesn't need a tune for a downpipe. He has an '02 WRX.

That being said, you will/should want one.

If you want JUST noise, get a CBE (cat back exhaust) no tune required, and it will/can give you the rumble you are looking for.
