Hey guys, I am planning on purchasing a 2004-2005 WRX. I am extremely sketchy about their transmissions, I am looking for a fun winter capable car that is dead reliable(Subaru claims to have long lasting cars). I understand that these cars have problems mainly due to people dumping the clutch. But if I intend to get 250whp+ out of a one of these WRX I want to ensure a safe, long lasting and performing machine. Spending the money for a PPG is kind of out of the question, heh, surely a good choice though.
So the question, what should be upgraded on these 5 speeds in order for them to keep me worry free? It will certainly be slightly abused, I don't believe I could ever drive it like my grandmother.
You said it yourself, PPGs.. By that I simply mean a gearset.. If you don't shock load the stock trans you will be fine.. Preload and it can last a long time.
Edwin from andrewtech said they are a decent replacement from stock wrx gears, they are a little wider, BUT no where near as strong as STI gears. Hence the reason why there are only like $1,300. This is FACT, not fiction
i have a 04 wrx and my trans is stronger than hell i have ppl tell me to be easy and what not but i have no problem with mine all shifts smooth and clean
Thats why I wasnt sure, I remember someone saying that in nabisco.....so I am glad thats clarified. What kinda numbers are we talking about for the GT gears? Such as we know stage 2 blows up our stock wrx trannies, what kinda abuse can GT gears take?
Abuse and more importantly "SHOCK LOAD" breaks gearsets.. Not power.. I keep saying this guys.. Read the Trans Tech thread it's EASY to find, it the ONLY stickie in the transmission forum... Your stock gears "CAN" last a long time properly taken care of.
all i know is i heard my first straight cut gear box on a wrx at a meet the other day and WOW it sound sooo nice!
