VF22 setup

Hi guys, I'm wondering could the stock EJ20 handle a VF22 with some injectors and Street tuner running at about maybe 18-20 psi, it wouldn't be beat on a regular basis, maybe once in a blue moon.

By Street Tuner I assume you mean the Access Port, and by injectors, I assume you mean upgraded injectors and fuel pump. You'd also need a larger intercooler to get the most of out everything, but if it's realibility you're worried about, just remember, it's when you start abusing it when it starts to break. You should be fine with a VF22 setup on stock internals. Any good tuner will know how much boost to put in, when, and for how long.

Thanks Vew, this is just a path i might take, for now i'm saving up to get up to stage 2. But if i got up to decent HP numbers with the VF22 i would probably need an upgraded clutch, is there a clutch that wont slip under those kinds of numbers and wont break your trans?

I had a VF22 on my 03. I ran 21psi on 93 pump gas. no probs what so ever. Just don't launch it, you go through clutches and eventually a tranny.

Stock clutch will hold that, and if it doesn't get an act clutch. With my recent experience with exedy, stay away from them!

mxboy... What have you got against Exedy.... If you are going to say that I'd like to know what issues you had with them. I run an Exedy stage 3 and love it to death...

Subaruwrx200...One thing you have to remember is that every car will react slightly different with modification.
As soon as you begin to mod the car you will be decreasing its longevity... That being said there are alot of heavily modded cars that have lasted a long time... Don't beat the crap out of it and you should be fine...

A VF22 with supporting mods will be fine for the EJ20 motor.. Just get the AP or some other form of EM with a good tune and you will like the results...

What kind of RPM range are you looking at for that VF22 to spool?

I had full boost by 3600. I put out 301WHP and 300lb/ft on 105 race gase with no cats.

A friend of mine has a 430 whp wrx making 380+-20 torque. He purchased a exedy hyper single which was rated for more tq than he had. I was there the first time he tried to drive it, and it would not hold his power...period. When he took it apart huge chunks were missing from the pucks. He talked to a clutch builder, and was told that exedy clutches start to spin around 300 tq, and exedy will not warranty their products. So $1200 gets you a clutch that will not hold as much as a stock clutch. He has since gone with an ACT clutch, and recently ran a 12.1 at 115 with just a 1.8 60 foot...This was his first time at a drag strip.

Long story short, exedy will not hold rated power...act will.

Let's try to keep this on the original question. This thread's going off into different areas that would be better suited by starting a new thread(s).

Thanks guys.

My car is well, it's like 10 lbs of shit in a 5 lb bag...

wow 12.1 with 430whp that sucks, I'm thinkgin that the clutch is fine your friend just can't drive. not to mention that is too much power for the exedy hyper single, he would have been fine with their twin plate

the vf22 is a good turbo, I considered this but opted for the vf34 when I was shopping for my turbo, I liked the faster spool on the vf34.

I was worried about the spool before I put it on. But after driving it for a while I like that it spooled a little later. It allowed me to cruise more easily without going into boost and therefore helping with gas mileage. however, it's plenty fast enought to give you a long powerband.

you can pick them up pretty cheap too. I got mine from XXTuning with a ceramic coated exhaust housing for around $750.
