Uppipe

I looked through the old posts and could not find an answer to my question. From my understanding, the 2006 wrx uppipe does not have a cat in it. If the 2006 wrx does not have that cat, would it be illegal, technically speaking, to replace the original uppipe, in a 2005 wrx, with a new uppipe? I am trying to keep this legal because the sacramento police have been checking a lot of cars because of racing deaths, so i was just thinking about getting an uppipe, if it is legal, and a cobb ap. I am pretty sure that the cobb ap stage 1 is legal, so i am just hoping someone can answer my first question about the legality of an uppipe.

Any help would be nice.

Well if you are asking if you will fail a emmsions test just because you up-pipe is catless..no you won't.....the 06 does not have a cat in the up-pipe because of the 'force' produced..the cat would be blown the F away

OK ive done alot of research on this type of thing. For starters...removal of ANY cat is illegal. Replacing the uppipe with a catless in a pre-06 would technically be illegal. The cobb stage 1 is legal, this is only remapping your ecu. If you arent planning on raising the boost and your area is strict, Id just keep the uppipe. What do you mean cops are checking? Now if your only worried about emissions and its simply the obdII, as long as you have no CELS you are ok to go. I plan on going completely catless because i found a shop that says they wont do a visual test

I highly doubt theyd notice a replace uppipe though...that would be overly meticulous

There have been a couple street racing deaths recently, so the cops have been pulling over likely suspects and doing complete checks to make sure everything is legal. Under the hood, under the car, they have been pretty thorough. This is all i am really worried about. Thanks for the information though. I'll probobly just do the cobb ap, and since i drive in the hills all summer i'll probobly do some suspension upgrades.

Removing any cat is illegal. However, if you do get pulled over and they do an inspection of the car, they will not be able to see that you removed the stock uppipe as it is almost impossible to see when you are looking under the hood.

+1 There is no way they could tell you messed with the uppipe by looking under the hood. I bet most of the cops wouldn't even know what an uppipe is.

That depends. If you mod the heatshield and use it, then yes, you won't be able to see it unless you know what you're looking for. But if you don't put it back on there's an easy way to tell, look at the flange where it bolts to the turbo. Nice and shiny, depending on which uppipe you have.

If I was that worried about my uppipe, I'd either gut the stocker or find a used STi pipe.

My car is well, it's like 10 lbs of shit in a 5 lb bag...
