Turbo upgrade, need advice

I recently had my ECUTek reflash done at Payn Technologies, I was told that my turbo might be bad so I am looking into possible options for an upgrade. I have been reading other posts, just wanted to get your thoughts on this. Thanks. Oh, the reason he said that is my car is only boosting at 14lbs and spooling up really slowly. Thanks again.

tough one there

for payne to tell you that is a little off the wall IMO

sure, your turbo could be bad based on the reasons given... but also... the stock max boost is about 14 lbs... And what kind of boost control are you using??? Because i don't believe you'll spool much higher than that if you aren't bleeding enough boost away to 'trick' your wastegate into remaining closed... as for spooling slowly... that is anybody's guess without doing some tests and looking at the car more closely.... Could be a bad turbo, the sleeves spent and not allowing the blade to spin as freely as it should be... but again, that doesn't need to be the case just based on what you were told. Have you examined the turbo for any shaft play (can't be done without at least pulling off the intake tube that mates to the air intake housing of the turbo... how olds the turbo? how many miles, whats the max boost you've subjected it to?

I would get a second opinion before just trusting someone's diagnosis.

They don't by any chance sell turbos, do they?

Right now the only mods on the car are the ECUTek reflash, catback exhaust, and GFB Stealth BOV. I thought that maybe the BOV might be leaking and not allowing it to spool fast enough, but I dont know a whole lot about turbos so Im not sure if that can even happen. I was going to put the stock BOV back on and see if that helped. I highly respect Tom Payn's advice, he has treated me very well over the past few years, so I am hoping that the turbo isnt the problem. But i guess i need to prepare for the worst. My car currently has 38,800 miles on it, the mods are about 2000 miles old now. The boost has never been raised. Thanks for the responses, I appreciate the help. Hopefully I can get this worked out soon. Also, if anyone has a used stock turbo thats in good shape that they can sell to get me by,that would be great if it is the problem.

Hey guys, I found a few vf39 turbos for sale on ebay. I was wondering if this turbo will work on my WRX and what supporting mods i might need. Thanks.

Reflash, injectors, pump, new IC unless you plan to run low boost.

i wouldnt go through all the trouble for just a vf39.. i would at least go with a vf30.. the vf39 is a little better over stock but not worth getting new injectors and pump.. plus a new tune.. if your going to go with a bigger turbo go with one that will make a nice difference..

not to add insult to injury...

but if you had gotten a UTEC,

you wouldn't need to keep getting your ECU reflashed every time you changed one little aspect of modifications...

Lol, I know, but I got a deal on the ECUTek I couldnt pass up. I wasnt really planning on the turbo upgrade, and I still might try and find another stock turbo for now and worry about the upgrade over the winter(Michigan sucks). But Tom takes pretty good care of me so another reflash wont be too painful. I wish I had the extra cash to just do the UTEC right now.......

Why would Tom think the turbo is bad?

Bad bearings, bad seals?? Whats wrong with it?

If all you are having is a spool up problem that could be a couple things and not the turbo

Right now I think that slow spool up is the only problem. He said the boost was only hitting 14.2lbs, but from what Ive been told stock boost is only 14lbs anyway. I just put my BOV on like a month ago, and it seems like it has been happening since then. I was going to sell my car, but I have decided to keep it and just keep working on it. So hopefully I can get this worked out, because the reflash did make it seem like a new car. Anybody suggest taking off the BOV and taking it to the dealer?
